The Actors Awards were last night on Netflix, and it was no great surprise that HBO’s medical drama, The Pitt, took home a number of them. One was given to show lead Noah Wyle for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

That marked a record for any male actor, as Noah Wyle is the first to sweep that actor category in all five major award shows, taking home an Emmy, a Golden Globe, the Critics’ Choice Award and the Television Critics Association Award in addition to this one. As mentioned, this is for a male actor, as a number of women have achieved this, including Sarah Paulson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michelle Williams, Catherine O’Hara and Jean Smart. O’Hara won a posthumous award for her work on The Studio last night after her death a month ago.

Noah Wyle obviously did a number of Pitt-focused interviews, and now, over halfway through season 2, he’s ready to touch on the plot of season 3. There are obviously a dozen storylines easily running through each season, given how many patients are seen, but he revealed one in particular, which will focus on the coming real-life Medicare crisis:

“When you have characters that are as rich and diverse and as multi-dimensional as the ones that we have, it’s very easy to just sort of plot them into the future and figure out what they would be struggling with at that point. But, obviously, these cuts in Medicare, the ones that are going to affect Americans and put them off the rolls, hospital closures, there’s all sorts of very pressing issues that are facing hospitals and health care workers in America, and we’ve only scratched the surface.”

The Pitt routinely takes on multiple real-life healthcare issues each season. We’ve seen bed shortages, mass shootings, abortion policy, end-of-life care, vaccine hesitancy, and we’re about to get an ICE storyline in the next few episodes, the cast and creators have revealed. Dealing with the Medicare crisis seems like a logical next step.

We don’t know much about season 3 of The Pitt, which should again be out next January as HBO continues its weekly cadence (and almost certainly will even if it merges with Paramount Plus). Supposedly, it’s not going to be on another holiday like the Fourth of July. I do wonder if it might be in winter, however, even if it’s not Christmas or New Year’s.

We’ve also heard from Dr. Langdon actor Patrick Ball that his “arc” about his drug use and rehab will continue into the third season. Season 2 marks the character’s first day back in the ER, welcomed back by most but not so much by others like Dr. Santos and especially Dr. Robbie, who recently commented that while he’s happy he is getting the new help he needs, he’s “not sure he wants him in his ER,” throwing Langdon for a loop.

The Pitt creators and crew are generally pretty open about future storylines, so we’ll probably hear more about season 3 as season 2 presses on here.
