The Philadelphia Phillies have relied heavily on roster depth during their recent run of success, with a number of overlooked players stepping into key roles around the edges of the roster as the team has attempted to capture an elusive World Series championship in recent years.
As the Phillies continue their push atop the National League standings, a number of those former players remain scattered throughout the league, attempting to carve out roles with new organizations after leaving Philadelphia.
And one of those former Phillies contributors, who many fans remember as a promising slugger with the franchise, is once again searching for his next opportunity.
“The Orioles announced that utilityman Weston Wilson has been designated for assignment,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Mark Polishuk reported. “Taking Wilson’s place on both the 26-man and 40-man rosters is catcher Sam Huff, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk.”

The move came only a short time after Wilson joined the Orioles organization following the end of his tenure in Philadelphia.
During his time with the Phillies, Wilson developed into a promising depth piece capable of playing multiple positions while providing occasional power at the plate.
His best stretch came after earning a larger opportunity with the club in 2024.
“Wilson, 31, spent parts of his first three Major League seasons with Philadelphia,” Caleb Weintraub noted for NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Across 100 games with the club, the utility man slashed .242/.328/.428, tallying 20 extra-base hits.”
Wilson also made franchise history with a particularly good showing against a division rival.
“His most memorable moment came on August 15 against Washington, when he hit for the cycle,” Weintraub added. “Wilson became the 10th player in franchise history — and the first rookie — to accomplish the feat, doing so during the Phillies’ broadcasters in-the-stands game.”

The Orioles claimed Wilson off waivers before this season began and he saw 39 big-league at-bats before being cut from the roster. He slashed just .231/.348/.333 before being designated for assignment.
Wilson will now either be claimed by another organization or clear waivers and become available for assignment elsewhere. Regardless of what happens next, his designation marks another unexpected turn for a player who spent three seasons battling his way onto a major-league roster and enjoying some big moments in Philadelphia.
