As Major League Baseball’s trade deadline reshaped the postseason landscape, no move was more consequential than the Los Angeles Dodgers’ blockbuster acquisition of reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

The deal immediately strengthened a rotation that was already considered among baseball’s deepest and shifted even more attention toward the Dodgers’ championship aspirations and juggernaut march toward a third straight title.

Around the league, however, some other star players weren’t shy about questioning the move, particularly as the Detroit Tigers seemed to give up on their own title hopes to boost those of the odds-on favorite.

Philadelphia Phillies Star Kyle Schwarber Questions Detroit Tigers’ Decision To Trade Tarik Skubal

Among those expressing surprise was Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, who questioned Detroit’s championship aspirations after the decision.

“It’s a little shocking with (the Tigers) being still in it,” Schwarber said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber. “That was the weird thing to me. Maybe they just know something that none of us know and they just wanted to do something. I guess it was what they thought was the best quote-unquote deal.”

Schwarber’s comments echoed the reaction of many around baseball, particularly because the Tigers were still viewed as legitimate contenders when they completed the blockbuster. But they seemed particularly noteworthy coming from a member of the Phillies, who will be looking to dethrone the Dodgers this season, even after the Tigers’ trade.

On Monday, news surfaced that they had made their own blockbuster upgrade by acquiring infielder Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants.

Philadelphia Phillies Face Added Pressure After Los Angeles Dodgers Trade

While Schwarber questioned Detroit’s commitment to winning a championship , Philadelphia entered the deadline under considerable pressure to improve its own roster.

“The Phillies might be the most intriguing team because of their recent freefall,” Buster Olney wrote for ESPN shortly before the deadline passed. “Would they be so bold to make a move for a better defensive shortstop and push Trea Turner to the outfield? Especially with the (Bryce) Harper-David Dombrowski dynamic, there is a lot of pressure on the Philadelphia front office to be bold — at a time when the team is on the verge of dropping out of a playoff spot.”

That backdrop helps explain why the team felt it needed a big-time addition like Arraez, and it also helped explain why the Skubal trade resonated with Schwarber. For contenders like the Phillies, another ace joining an already loaded Dodgers rotation makes a difficult challenge even harder, no matter how the Phillies attempt to answer it.
