Real Madrid 2026/27 Season Preview: Lineups, Transfers, Predictions

The coach: Jose Mourinho

Mourinho’s first Madrid tenure, from 2010 to 2013, delivered a Copa del Rey and a La Liga title that broke Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, along with three bruising, occasionally toxic years that ended in a dressing-room fracture. His return is a different proposition. He is 63, has had underwhelming stints at Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, Fenerbahce and Benfica since leaving Chelsea in 2015, and arrives at a club he last managed when several of his current players were children.

What he offers is structure. Xabi Alonso’s Madrid, for stretches of last season, looked tactically muddled and defensively exposed. Mourinho’s sides are built the other way: compact shape, a clear defensive block, transition play through pace up front. That instinct suits a squad with Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Junior and now Yan Diomande in it, but whether it suits Jude Bellingham, who thrives in a more expansive system, is one of the season’s open questions.

The signings

Perez has sanctioned close to half a billion euros (€500 million/$575 million) in incomings. Ibrahima Konaté arrived on a free transfer from Liverpool to reinforce a centre-back position hit hard by injuries last season, and Bernardo Silva joined on a free from Manchester City, giving Mourinho a versatile, tactically literate option across midfield and the front line.

Marc Cucurella came from Chelsea to compete at left-back, Denzel Dumfries arrived from Inter Milan after Madrid triggered a reported €20 million ($23 million) release clause, and Carlos Espí was added from the Spanish lower leagues as a long-term goalkeeping prospect.

Then came the outlier. Madrid paid RB Leipzig a club-record fee, reportedly €125 million ($144 million) plus bonuses that could push the total past €140 million ($161 million), for 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande. It eclipses what they paid for Jude Bellingham in 2023. Diomande was playing in front of a few hundred people for Leganes reserves in early 2025. Eighteen months later he is a Bundesliga Young Player of the Season and a World Cup performer walking into the most expensive attack in the world.

Rodri, long the priority defensive-midfield target, chose Barcelona instead as his Manchester City exit took shape, a rare miss for Real Madrid’s recruitment team this summer.

The star man: Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappe enters the season as the reigning World Cup Golden Boot winner and, by most measures, the best player on the planet. He scored freely under Alonso and Arbeloa alike last season, and a more structured, defensively secure Mourinho side should create more of the transition chances he thrives on.

The question that follows him into pre-season is not talent but weight, as Real Madrid have gone two years without a major trophy despite fielding him, and the patience of a club that measures success only in silverware is not unlimited. Mourinho has described Mbappé’s talent as “ridiculous”, but has also pointed to Alonso and Arbeloa’s struggles as being “a failure of everyone”. Mbappé now has to help make amends.

The one to watch: Arda Güler

Preseason has been a chance to stand out for several of Real Madrid’s second string with World Cup stars arriving later in the summer, and Turkey’s failures in the United States allowed Arda Güler to join training from the start and make an immediate impression.

With assists and goals, the playmaker is now 21 and has yet to secure a regular first team role under Carlo Ancelotti, Alonso or Arbeloa. As Jude Bellingham arrived to pre-season training as the last player to rejoin the group, Güler is likely to start the season as a starter and will be looking to build on that.

Expected lineup

Mourinho has stuck largely to a 4-3-3 through preseason. The likeliest XI once everyone returns from World Cup duty: Thibaut Courtois in goal; a back four of Dumfries or Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen at centre-back, and Cucurella at left-back; Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde screening in midfield with Bellingham pushed further forward; and an attack of Diomande on the right, Mbappé through the middle and Vinicius on the left. Depth options include Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Guler, Rodrygo and Endrick, giving Mourinho a bench most rivals would envy.

Vinicius’ situation, unresolved for much of the summer amid interest from Arsenal, was settled when he agreed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2032, removing the last major distraction before the season starts.

The first big test

Madrid open away to Espanyol on August 22, before a rearranged Matchday 1 fixture against Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu four days later, with the World Cup having pushed the calendar back.

The early fixture that will tell Madridistas most about where this rebuild stands comes on September 20, away to Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the first Madrid derby of the Mourinho era. The first Clasico follows on October 25 at Camp Nou. Between them, those two fixtures will offer the clearest read yet on whether Mourinho’s Madrid is built to win the league Barcelona have controlled for the past two seasons.
