Perhaps one of the reasons why Dolly Parton was loved worldwide over the course of six-decade career stemmed from the Queen of Country Music’s refusal to discuss partisan politics.

Parton died on Tuesday at age 80 after a short battle with cancer, according to her family. Since then, tributes have been pouring out worldwide from Parton’s showbiz colleagues. And yes, even Republicans including presidents Donald Trump and George W. Bush, as well as Democratic presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, posted heartfelt tributes on social media — demonstrating the love for the showbiz icon from both sides of the political aisle; political figures she never publicly praised nor criticized.

“I don’t like to get involved in politics, because first of all, I have as many Republican fans as I do Democrats,” Parton told USA Today in 2020. “I don’t want to offend anybody, I have a right to myself. Like God gave us free will, America gave us free speech, but you’ve got to be responsible for anything you say and do.”

In the same interview, Parton told USA Today that he kept up on political coverage, saying, “I watch Fox News. I watch CNN.”

“It’s like I don’t even know what to believe, but I just watch it out of curiosity because it’s good television. Crazy, lunacy, but I just don’t get involved,” Parton told USA Today. “I am not political, and I refuse to get caught up in political things. I just look at it, and I just think what I think. I’m just saying, ‘Good Lord, what are these people doing? Crazy. They don’t care about us.’”

To further prove her stance on politics, Parton refused offers to accept the nation’s highest civilian honor— the Presidential Medal of Freedom — twice from Trump and once from former Democratic President Joe Biden, a claim verified by Snopes.

Despite Parton’s refusal to engage in politics, reporters still tried to get the entertainer to comment on certain political figures. In an ABC News interview clip from 2018, Parton was broached with a question about Trump by Nightline’s David Wright, to which the singer replied, “I’m not addressing that. I learned a long time ago, keep your damn mouth shut if you want to stay in show business … I’m not in politics, I’m an entertainer.”

Dolly Parton Was Even Reluctant To Accept Showbiz Awards

While Dolly Parton didn’t want to get involved in partisan politics, she wasn’t game to ruffle any feathers when it came to showbiz politics, either. In one case, the country music singer and songwriter initially declined an invitation to join the 2022 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Even though I am extremely flattered to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right,” the singer-songwriter wrote in a statement, “I really do not want the votes split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.”

Parton, however, changed her mind and accepted the honor after putting out her rock and roll album Rockstar.

Parton also accepted an Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2025 to honor her lifelong philanthropic efforts with a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

While she couldn’t attend AMPAS’ Governor’s Awards in Los Angeles because of health challenges, Parton accepted the award via a video message, saying in part, “I don’t take this sort of thing lightly. It makes me want to dream up new ways to lift people up … isn’t that what we’re supposed to be here for?”
