The Toronto Blue Jays entered this season with expectations of building on a surprising World Series run, but their momentum has been difficult to maintain.
A major reason for that has been the unexpected offensive struggles of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., whose bat has not consistently resembled the one that helped make him the face of the franchise.
Those struggles have become increasingly difficult for the Blue Jays to ignore as the season has progressed. Guerrero remains an excellent defensive first baseman, but his offensive production has left Toronto searching for answers from one of its most important players.
The frustration reached another level recently during a particularly heartbreaking loss to the Kansas City Royals, when Guerrero’s career as the Blue Jays’ franchise slugger hit a new low in front of home fans.
“When Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to second in the bottom of the sixth, the struggling Jays star heard what were likely the loudest boos he has gotten at his home ballpark,” Mike Wilner reported for the Toronto Star.

Guerrero’s ongoing power outage, coming as it has shortly after the $500 million extension he signed last year, hasn’t pushed the Blue Jays to move him lower in the batting order. But it has motivated a different and surprising kind of change instead.
“The manager has maintained his usual stability,” Steve Simmons wrote for the Toronto Sun. “But the clubhouse guys took it upon themselves to move Guerrero’s locker to the other end of the room. He has Kevin Gausman’s old spot. Maybe, something as simple as this, will help.”
The move isn’t one that typically helps push struggling sluggers out of their slumps, but it might be one of the only options the Blue Jays feel they have to try and motivate some kind of change from Guerrero.
Until Guerrero starts hitting some more home runs at home, questions surrounding him are difficult to avoid.
“But now we wonder: What’s wrong with Guerrero?” Simmons added. “Is this just a terrible year? Is his health killing his swing and his power? Is he playing hurt? Or has he just lost himself?”

The uncertainty is particularly striking because Guerrero’s offensive talent has been evident since he entered professional baseball. His defense has steadily improved and has remained a bright spot this season, but the consistency and power expected from him at the plate have been missing.
For Toronto, getting Guerrero going could be the biggest key to seizing a coveted playoff spot. A struggling lineup can survive a slump from a supporting player. It is much harder when that player is the franchise cornerstone.
The locker change certainly won’t fix Guerrero’s swing by itself. But it represents a simple attempt by his team to change something around him as he searches for a way out of one of the most difficult offensive stretches of his career.
