Netflix’s Best New Movie Has A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Netflix may not always land the plane when it comes to movies on its service, but sometimes it demonstrates solid foresight. That’s what’s happened with a new movie coming to Netflix, one that has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score with almost two dozen reviews in.

The movie is Possible Love, a Korean feature that’s nearly three hours long, and first premiered at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, which started just a few days ago on September 6, and it’s competing for the coveted Golden Lion there. It has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics who have seen it so far. It will be released in theaters in South Korea on September 23, in the US on October 23, and then finally reach Netflix on November 6. So this isn’t one you can go watch today, but rather one you want to put on your calendar when it arrives, as movies this good on Netflix are going to be few and far between until then. Expect an Oscar nomination as well, come next year.

What’s Possible Love about? Here’s the synopsis:

“A story of two married couples — a laid-off worker and his spouse and a documentary filmmaker and her spouse — crossing paths to film a documentary and facing their different lives and hidden desires.”

The film is directed by Lee Chang-dong, who also directed one of my favorite Korean movies, Burning, in 2018. Past that, he’s done Heartbeat, Poetry, Secret Sunshine, Oasis and more, all well-liked features. The film stars Sul Kyung-gu of the unforgettable Memories of a Murder, and has teamed with Lee Chang-dong on other films in the past. Also starring is Jeon Do-yeon from The Housemaid (the Korean one, not the Sydney Sweeney one)., If that wasn’t enough, there’s also Cho Yeo-jeong from Parasite. This is an absolute all-star lineup, and as such, it may be no surprise that Possible Love is getting such rave reviews.

Netflix has been heavily leaning on Korean content the past few years, spurred in part by the enormous success of the record-setting Squid Game. In April 2023, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced that Netflix would invest $2.5 billion into Korean content alone, covering both TV and movies. That was over a four-year period, which includes 2026. Since then, the service has aired a huge number of Korean shows, and a good amount of films. Possible Love, however, may turn out to be one of its biggest gets in terms of streaming rights.

So, it is no fun that we have to wait a while for Possible Love, but it seems like it’ll be worth it when it does arrive. Either mark your calendars or try to find somewhere to see it when it arrives in the US in October.
