Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.’s staff is telling Senate leaders he will return next week when the Senate reconvenes—after widespread scrutiny of his prolonged absence following a June fall at his home in Washington, D.C.

Republican leaders are preparing for McConnell to come back to work next week, though the prospects of him doing so are still uncertain, Punchbowl reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., also told reporters last week he has spoken to McConnell’s staff and “it’s their goal” for him to return to the Senate on Sept. 14 when they reconvene from recess.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat who has pressured McConnell for more transparency about his condition, said Wednesday that McConnell “owes an explanation to the American people” if he doesn’t come back next week, adding, “you can’t not show up for work and not call and talk to your boss—and his boss is the people of Kentucky.”
There are no reports of McConnell being seen publicly since his hospitalization in June, and his office has not said when he expects to return—McConnell spokesperson David Popp referred Punchbowl to his office’s last statement in August when asked if he would return after recess.
McConnell said in the Aug. 6 statement that he had been discharged from a rehabilitation center and would continue physical therapy at home during the state work period.

“I’ve still heard absolutely nothing from the senator,” Beshear said Wednesday. “He has been absent from work for about three months now, which is unacceptable. He’s been unwilling to go to camera, to call in to any news program, just to let people know he’s OK or show that he has the capacity to serve.” Beshear also criticized Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and said he “has a responsibility to check on him and report to the American people.”

McConnell, 84, was hospitalized on June 14 after a fall in his Washington, D.C. home left him briefly unconscious. He then experienced a “mild case of pneumonia,” he said in his initial statement on July 12, which was accompanied by a photo of him in the hospital alongside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. In a second statement on July 27 with a similar photo of him and Chao, he said he’d been moved to a rehab facility, but wasn’t medically cleared to leave. McConnell’s doctor said in the statement “his bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility.”
