Jeremiah Paulson’s Nephew Killed Kay On ‘Anna Pigeon’

After Zoe takes her home, Anna showers and tries to decompress but her mind is on Kay. She goes to look for her and is joined by Freddie part way through her search. They find Kay at the bottom of a hill.

At the morgue, the coroner tells them that Kay had been sexually assaulted. Her cause of death was a blow to the head or a hard fall. When Anna shares that there was a bloody rock at Kay’s camp site, the coroner settles on it being the hard fall that killed her.

Anna asks if Kay had cuts on her back, but she didn’t. The answer unnerves her enough to show Freddie her own cuts. Her only possible lead is Caleb, the college kid who threatened to make her pay after they got into it over him peeing in the river and she broke his radio. But she doesn’t know if he even knew Kay.

Still, the two pay Caleb a visit. Clocking the expensive watch on his wrist, Anna recognizes it as the timepiece of the young man who’d tried to deescalate the situation when she first arrived to warn them about their behavior. The polite one.

With some light pressing, Anna gets Caleb to roll on his friend. He admits to helping him move Kay’s body and his payment was the watch. However, he lawyers up to avoid sharing anymore information that could implicate him further.

Upon inspection, the watch has blood on the band. It’s also inscribed with a sentimental message to Jayden (Sam Duke) from his uncle who turns out to be Jeremiah Paulson.

At the station, Jayden (referred to as JP) is questioned by Freddie in Geoff’s (Ryan Northcott) office. The park supervisor is present because this is his station, but he’s only an added law enforcement presence. Freddie handles JP even as Jeremiah and their lawyer try to get him to say as little as possible.

However, with JP acknowledging he knew Kay, the blood on his watch band, the sand in the bezel that likely matches the sand found in the cave Anna was held in, and his black-and-blue face which would match the injury pattern of someone kicked in the face just like Anna’s captor was, JP is looking guilty.

Until tests are run all of what the FBI has is circumstantial and not enough to arrest JP on but it’s enough to shake him and Jeremiah up. They leave in a huff with Anna quick on their heels. She was the one who had to tell Kay’s friends that she was murdered, and she promised she would get justice.

While confronting the Paulsons, Anna lays into JP and describes the carving on her back as a brand like they do with their livestock. JP insists that he and Kay had consensual sex and that he doesn’t know anything about the cuts on Anna’s back.

Jeremiah directs him to get in the truck and tells Anna that his nephew is a disappointment but he didn’t hurt her. He says JP has an alibi; he was at a cattle stock exchange three nights ago and that they could check his social media because kids his age document everything online.

But an alibi doesn’t mean JP wasn’t involved. It only means that he had help, which Anna finds out the hard way when she pays him a visit.

Bethany Helped JP Cover Up A Murder

Anna’s intent is to use herself as bait to lure JP into a false sense of accomplishment. She’d deduced early on in “There’s Always a Road” that he thinks he excels at outsmarting people and playing into their weaknesses. Through conversation and feigned helplessness, her plan is to get JP to go back to the cave with her so she can catch him on tape admitting to his crime.

What she doesn’t expect is for Bethany to be at Jeremiah’s house. It dons on her quickly as she begins to feel the drugging effect of the tea she’d sipped that Bethany is involved in what happened to her. The tip off is the sandwiches she brought in. Anna had thought it strange that her captor had thrown a sandwich to her. It never made sense. Why take the time to make something for the person you’re holding hostage?

But Bethany would do that. Awkward and assumed to be fragile, Bethany had been a stay-at-home wife in search of community and belonging who showed her appreciation and care through preparing food. However, fragility went out the window when she dragged Anna’s unconscious body from the house to a truck and then the river with the goal of drowning her.

While holding Anna underwater, Bethany admits to having to do this. For her, this is about maintaining her and her husband Manny’s (Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz) safety. Trouble follows Anna and Manny wouldn’t leave his job so they could start new elsewhere. She feels has to remove Anna from the equation.

At the last minute, Bethany pulls off. She’s unable to go through with the murder and Anna uses her hesitance to her advantage. Anna was never as drugged as Bethany thought. She’d learned her lesson from the water she drunk in the cave and suspected JP might try to poison her again so she’d sipped lightly at the tea allowing her to lessen its effect.

Making quick work of subduing Bethany, Anna turns her into the authorities who collect evidence from her house while Manny looks on and is informed of what his wife did. Her arrest also means JP is on the hook for his own crimes.

Who Is Bethany’s Father On ‘Anna Pigeon’?

Bethany didn’t help JP out of a misplaced sense of loyalty due to work as a housekeeper for Jeremiah. In the closing moments of “There’s Always a Road,” it’s revealed that she did so because the wealthy landowner is her father. The implication is that her motive was showing him that she’d do anything he needed. However, the sentiment is not shared.

Locked up, with no other recourse, she asks Manny to call her dad. She doesn’t want the help her husband promises to get her. What she needs is the man who has wanted no part in her life. Manny does what she asks without knowing who the man will be on the other side of the line, but Jeremiah doesn’t pick up.

He’s designated as ‘Dad’ in her phone, but she’s simply ‘Bethany’ in his. He ignores the call, sending it to voicemail, and deletes the footage of Anna arriving at his home. When he’s done, he heads to his balcony where he takes in the lay of Glacier National Park and all of the land he intends on owning one way or another.

It’s not clear whether he knows who Bethany is to him, but it’s obvious he’s aware of the trouble she’s in and won’t be helping. At least not now. It’s possible that for Jeremiah, Bethany was a means to an end. Someone he could use to get out of a jam of his nephew’s making.
