Dolly Parton has been counted as one of the bestselling artists of all time for decades, but the music industry has changed since she first broke into mainstream consciousness. These days, streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, iHeartRadio, Tidal and others dominate the business, and purchases – especially of songs – have dropped off dramatically in the span of only a decade or so.
Contemporary talents typically perform exceptionally well on those streaming sites, and some have managed to develop fan bases that love purchasing music as well. There are countless artists who have been recording and releasing music for a long time, and who have hit it big on Billboard’s rosters, who will never be able to compete with today’s hits on streaming outlets, though sometimes a decades-old cut can become a streaming sensation.
This week, Parton posthumously scores a very important smash on one of Billboard’s streaming rankings — the most competitive of all of them, in fact. Since her death last month, sales and streams of Parton’s albums and songs have exploded and remained impressive. It is on streaming apps where many have turned to honor her work, and the superstar scores a special new streaming win this frame.
Dolly Parton Scores a New Streaming Songs Top 10
Parton lands a new top 10 win on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart this week. “9 to 5” lifts from No. 12, where it debuted last frame, to No. 10, barely breaking into the uppermost tier.
“9 to 5” becomes Parton’s second top 10 hit on the Streaming Songs chart, but sadly, she never got to see her name inside that region. Last week, “Jolene” debuted at No. 7, and it remains her highest-charting smash on the tally.
Dolly Parton Replaces Herself at No. 1
At the same time that “9 to 5” becomes a Streaming Songs top 10, it also improves on the Digital Song Sales ranking. Parton replaces herself at No. 1 as “9 to 5” becomes only her second leader. Last time around, “I Will Always Love You” stood out as the bestselling cut of any style in the United States via platforms like iTunes, as that was the hit Americans flocked to in the wake of her passing.
“9 to 5” Reaches New Peak Positions on Several Charts
“9 to 5” also rises to new highs on another trio of Billboard charts this week. The classic improves to Nos. 6, 21 and 82 on the Country Streaming Songs, Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, respectively.
The track is steady at No. 8 on the Hot Country Songs ranking. It moves down on the Billboard Hot 100, dipping one spot to No. 19 after rising as high as No. 1 during its original promotional run.
Dolly Parton’s Streaming Success Is Relatively New
Parton first reached the Streaming Songs chart in April 2024 alongside Beyoncé. The superstar recruited the country legend for her first country music set, and their team-up “Tyrant” spent one frame at No. 37. Several months later, Post Malone did the same, and their collaboration “Have the Heart” spent a single turn at No. 46.
Four of Parton’s half-dozen appearances on the Streaming Songs chart came after her death. In addition to “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers and “I Will Always Love You” launched on the tally last week, opening at Nos. 25 and 32, respectively. All four of Parton’s highest-charting hits on the Streaming Songs list have reached their peaks in the days since the world lost a trailblazer.
