WWE Raw Mexico City: Penta Beating Roman Reigns Was The Right Choice

WWE Raw emanated from Arena CDMX in Mexico City, and had all the makings to instantly become the most memorable Raw of 2026, if not ever.

That decision was solely up to WWE. And even if they don’t make the “right” decision, Raw: Mexico City could still end up becoming memorable for all the wrong reasons.

WWE Raw’s high-stakes main event featured hometown hero Penta challenging Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and the realistic possibility of a shocking upset of the oft-insurmountable Tribal Chief. Sami Zayn and Stephanie Vaquer each scored surprising world title wins during WWE’s international tour of Mexico and Chile, respectively, this past weekend. Lucha Folk Hero El Grande Americano completed the hat trick with his defeat of Dominik Mysterio at TripleMania 34. The babyface wave of success has some fans encouraged, while another, more cynical crowd is convinced that WWE is just buttering up fans before a letdown in its Mexico City climax. This sentiment became stronger after Chad Gable defeated lucha libre standout Dragon Lee for the Intercontinental Championship.

Roman Reigns was a strong favorite to retain against Penta, but Penta winning was the better business decision for many reasons, many of which were discussed in my coverage of Raw: Mexico City this morning. To add to this case, Nielsen’s recent change in viewership methodology (one of many in the past several months), now focuses on Spanish-speaking and Hispanic households. Early returns have seen positive inflation for pro wrestling viewership after previous changes hurt viewership under the now-dubious analytics company.

Penta winning the world title would turn an already popular lucha libre superstar into a pro wrestling deity in Mexico. These are the type of wins that have built some of pro wrestling’s biggest draws. Penta’s win will make him a powerful chess piece and a ratings-mover on television shows like SmackDown and NXT. Penta could also be a a valuable asset in the ongoing war for Mexico as WWE and AAA seek a TV deal while WWE rival AEW continues its partnership with AAA rival CMLL.

WWE Raw goes head-to-head with the first Monday Night Football game of the season, and it is in position to be every bit as newsworthy, if not more. WWE had far more gain from Penta beating Roman Reigns tonight, whether it’s from a booking standpoint, business reasons or, most importantly, emotional satisfaction.

The Judgment Day Destroys El Grande Americano And Stephanie Vaquer

• Rey Mysterio opened the show with a neck brace. Fans cheered Rey as he recapped the weekend, notably Stephanie Vaquer regaining the WWE Women’s World Heavyweight Championship. Rey introduced Vaquer, who came out to another hero’s welcome.
• Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan interrupted Stephanie and Rey, who reminded Dirty Dom of his AAA Mega World Championship loss at TripleMania 34. Dominik challenged his injured father and Vaquer to a mixed tag team match. Adam Pearce said Rey was medically uncleared. El Grande Americano came to the rescue, accepting the challenge on Rey’s behalf. The opening segment went about 20 minutes and the crowd was white-hot for every second of it. Rey promised a historic moment tonight. I hope he’s right.
• The babyfaces started out hot, with fans chanting for both El Grande Americano and Stephanie Vaquer. El Grande shouted Spanish obscenities at Dom while working him over in the corner. Dominik tripped up Stephanie Vaquer to give the heels the advantage. El Grande Americano and Vaquer launched a joint comeback. Vaquer hit the Devil’s Kiss on Vaquer, and with Rey’s blessing, she hit a 619 on both Dominik and Liv Morgan.
• El Grande Americano went to the top rope, but he was cut off by JD McDonagh for the disqualification. Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez entered the fray and the babyfaces were outnumbered. Dominik attacked Rey and went after his neck brace. Dom then turned his attention to El Grande Americano and hit a frog splash. Huge heel heat to kick off Raw, which bodes well for a satisfying payoff in the main event. Fingers crossed.

Match Grade: B

Je’Von Evans Def. Big Cass and Austin Theory

• Je’Von made light work of the heels in the opening minutes, dispatching of both Austin Theory and Big Cass to the outside. Je’Von went for his runaround barricade dive, but Big Cass caught him and chokeslammed him onto Theory.
• Austin Theory hit a fireman’s carry spinout bomb to a huge reaction. Theory did a great job selling that he was struggling to pick up the the seven-footer, but he hit the move with relative ease. This incited “Esto es Lucha!” chants. Big Cass interrupted a Theory pinfall on Evans and slammed Theory into the barricade. Mexico City hated Big Cass.
• Je’Von bounced off Big Cass and hit an OG Cutter for the win.

Match Grade: B

Chad Gable Def. Dragon Lee

• Fans started out chanting for Dragon Lee, who did not receive an entrance, but some backed Chad Gable. Dragon Lee peppered Gable with offense, including a wrecking-ball kick in the corner. Gable rolled to the outside, and Dragon Lee followed him with a tope.
• Gable hit a beautiful bridging suplex on the challenger, inspiring more “Esto es Lucha” chants. Lee dropped Gable on the announce desk on the outside, and hit a tope through the ropes and onto Gable and the table.
• WWE Raw came back from break with the champion and challenger going back-and-forth. Lee and Gable took turns countering each other, ending in a sitout powerbomb by Gable. Nearfall. Gable dragged Dragon Lee to the corner with Mexico City going crazy. Lee blocked a Chad Gable moonsault with his knees and hit a lights out elbow for a nearfall.
• Dragon Lee hit a double stomp to the chest on a draping Gable, all the way down to the floor. The two broke the 10-count at the last second. Lee went for a second Operation Dragon, but Gable countered with a belly-to-belly suplex. Gable hit a moonsault, but only got a two-count. Now fans were chanting “si se puede.” Lee hit a knee to the back of Chad’s neck, followed by an Operation Dragon for a false finish.
• Dragon Lee set up a Style Clash, but Gable countered with an ankle lock. Lee fought out of it with everything he could, ultimately transitioning into a Styles Clash for another nearfall. Gable held onto Lee’s ankle and resumed the ankle lock. Gable grape-vined in the middle of the ring. Fans were desperately pleading with Lee to not tap out, but he succumbed. Gable won.

Lola Vice Def. Raquel Rodriguez And Kelani Jordan

• Raquel Rodriguez dominated early with the crowd clearly behind Lola Vice. Vice and Jordan teamed up and double-clotheslined Raquel to the outside. As Lola admired her work, Kelani Jordan took advantage and slammed Lola to the mat by her hair.
• Kelani hit a springboard moonsault on Rodriguez, followed by a flying senton from Lola. Raquel recovered and regained control over Lola. Vice gained the upper hand with rapid-fire kicks to Raquel and Kelani. The crowd came alive for Lola’s signature butt bumps.
• Vice grazed Jordan with a spinning high kick, but Rodriguez broke up the count. Raquel went for a running big boot on Lola, but she missed and hit Kelani. Lola rolled up Rodriguez for the win.

Match Grade: B-

Roman Reigns Def. Penta

• Penta made a spectacular entrance as the challenger was wearing a Mexican headdress. Fans chanted Penta’s name as he made his way to the ring, and when the music shut off, they gave him an “Ole” chant.
• Arena CDMX chanted “si se puede” as a fired-up Penta soaked it all in. Roman Reigns’ music hit as Arena Mexico exploded in boos. Roman was in extremely hostile territory similar to his 2023 match against Sami Zayn in Montreal, or the year prior against Drew McIntyre in Scotland.
• Mexico City popped loudly when the bell rang. Fans chanted “cero miedo.” Roman Reigns arrogantly shushed the fans as they booed the Tribal Chief out of the building. Penta came out aggressively with 10-count punches and an enzuigiri in the corner.
• Roman Reigns gained the advantage with fans chanting “culero.” Penta battled back with a dive to the outside on Roman Reigns.
• Roman slowed the match down and got the crowd fired up with strong heel work. At one point, Reigns hopped on the mic and demanded Mexico acknowledge him. Penta came back and injured Reigns’ arm with a Sacrifice. Penta hit a Mexican Destroyer, but Reigns came back immediatel with a Fighting Spirit Spear. Nearfall.
• Penta scored a second Mexican Destroyer for a false finish, and Roman cut him off with a Superman Punch as Penta went for a springboard. Reigns followed up with a spear for the win.

Match Grade: B+
