The Houston Astros spent much of the past decade establishing themselves as one of baseball’s most consistent contenders, winning World Series championships in 2017 and 2022 while regularly finding themselves in the postseason picture.
That recent dominance has made the Astros’ current predicament especially notable. Houston is fighting to keep its playoff hopes alive, even amid a shallow American League field.
“There is nonexistent depth, disastrous allocation of resources and a roster so deficient that the general manager who constructed it has already been dismissed,” Chandler Rome wrote for The Athletic. “Hence, everything has to go right for the Houston Astros.”
As the Astros cling to an American League West division lead with a .500 record, one former member of their recent dynasty has been dealt a significant setback.
Former Houston Astros All-Star, World Series Champion, Cut From New York Mets Roster After Brutal Game
Last week, Chris Devenski was outrighted by the New York Mets shortly after a disastrous appearance against the Miami Marlins in which he allowed five earned runs while recording only one out, according to the official transaction log.
The 35-year-old right-hander has become a journeyman at this point, but Astros fans will recall that he was a key part of the team’s 2017 World Series championship.
Devenski’s connection to Houston dates back to 2012, when the Astros acquired him from the Chicago White Sox organization. He quickly became one of the more intriguing pitching prospects in the system, even throwing a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts for the Lexington Legends in 2012.
His rise continued through the minor leagues before he reached Houston in 2016. Devenski immediately established himself as a valuable multi-inning weapon, posting a 2.16 ERA across 48 appearances during his rookie season.
His breakout continued in 2017, when he earned his lone All-Star selection after recording a 2.68 ERA, 100 strikeouts and 80 2/3 innings. He also appeared in five games during Houston’s World Series championship run, earning a win in Game 2.
That Astros tenure eventually ended, and Devenski has since moved through several organizations.
New York Mets Cut Former Houston Astros Star After Harsh Outing
Devenski was on his second stint with the Mets this season after spending time with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but his latest struggles has seen him cut from the big-league roster again.
“Since leaving Houston, he has pitched for the Diamondbacks, Phillies, Angels, Rays, Mets and Pirates,” Darragh McDonald wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “He has had brief stints with the latter two clubs this year, allowing ten earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. If he accepts the assignment, the Mets could call on him again if they need a fresh arm before the season is done.”
His latest appearance helps explain why New York decided to make the move. Devenski entered Wednesday’s game against Miami with the Mets leading 8-4, but surrendered five earned runs in just one-third of an inning as the Marlins mounted another comeback in an eventual 15-14 New York victory.
The outing pushed Devenski’s 2026 major league ERA to 11.74, according to his game log.
For a pitcher who once played a significant role on a World Series champion and represented the Astros at an All-Star Game, it has been a difficult late-career stretch.
