Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ is out this weekend, but it has ended a long-running streak for the actor via its Rotten Tomatoes score.

Zany-looking Tom Cruise film Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is shaping up to be a big box office bomb, possibly one of the worst of the year. It may open with just $12 million this coming weekend on a reported $160-$180 million budget, with the odd, cryptic concept and Tom Cruise in aged makeup being somewhat impenetrable to theatergoers, despite Cruise’s star appeal.
But Digger is not Top Gun or Mission Impossible. Nor is it being reviewed like those films either, as Rotten Tomatoes scores indicate. And it’s quite a bad situation for Tom Cruise specifically.
With a 53% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics (it was a 41% for a while), that makes it the worst-reviewed Tom Cruise movie this decade, but even past that, the worst in nine years, going all the way back to 2017’s The Mummy, which clocked an abysmal 15%. Since then, however, no Cruise movie has scored under an 80%, which includes three Mission Impossible movies, American Made and Top Gun: Maverick. Maverick, MI: Dead Reckoning and MI: Fallout have 96%, 96% and 98% scores, respectively.
Cruise does have a number of rotten-rated movies before this era. That includes:
- The Mummy (2017) – 15% critic score,
- Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) – 37% critic score
- Oblivion (2013) – 53% critic score
- Rock of Ages (2012) – 43% critic score
- Knight and Day (2010) – 51% critic score
- Lions for Lambs (2007) – 28% critic score
- Vanilla Sky (2001) – 41% critic score
- Mission Impossible II (2000) – 58% critic score
- Far and Away (1992) – 51% critic score
- Days of Thunder (1990) – 38% critic score
- Cocktail (1988) – 11% critic score
- Top Gun (1986) – 58% critic score
- Legend (1985) – 34% critic score
- Losin’ It (1982) – 18% critic score
Well, uh, no one’s perfect, but obviously he has starred in a large number of all-time classics, and over his 40+ year career, he’s had streaks of many years without a miss. This was his longest stretch by far, but Digger has ended it. Then again, critics aren’t always right. Top Gun has a rotten score? For shame.
If you’ve seen the trailer for Digger (you can watch it above), you might be able to imagine why this is not a big box office draw. Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu had a big pair of years over a decade ago with 2015’s The Revenant and 2014’s Birdman, but that was a long time ago now. We’ll see how he and Cruise fare this coming weekend.
