The Toronto Blue Jays will watch the postseason from home after their attempt to follow up last year’s World Series appearance with a championship fell flat.
Though the team still had reason to hope for a playoff bid at the latest trade deadline, the front office opted to trade away some veteran players while keeping others.
And one of those trade castoffs was center fielder Daulton Varsho, who was in the midst of a down campaign as he prepared to reach free agency.
Toronto Blue Jays’ Former Outfielder Misses Playoff Debut With New Team
The Blue Jays traded Varsho to the Houston Astros, who had hopes of integrated him into their own postseason plans. But the team placed Varsho on the injured list last week, ending his regular season and removing him from consideration for their Wild Card Series against the Chicago White Sox.
“The Astros put Daulton Varsho on the injured list, ending his season and taking him out of consideration for any potential Wild Card series,” The Athletic’s Chandler Rome reported. “Varsho has two cysts in his left wrist that he’s dealt with all season, but have recently gotten worse.”
On Wednesday, the team confirmed Varsho would not be able to return no matter how far the Astros went into the postseason.
“Astros announce that Daulton Varsho underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left wrist yesterday, ending his 2026 season,” Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported.
The timing is particularly unfortunate for Varsho, who was hoping to lean on his defensive ability and left-handed bat to provide a free agency showcase in October.
Toronto Blue Jays Trade Casualty Suffers Setback Before Free Agency
Varsho’s poor production and ongoing injury problems have likely hurt his potential value in free agency.
“A free agent after this season, Varsho was slashing .243/.307/.375 with 19 doubles, seven home runs and 26 RBIs in 99 games this year for the Blue Jays before he was dealt,” Brian McTaggart wrote for MLB.com. “Last year, he launched 20 home runs in only 71 games while battling shoulder and hamstring injuries. He started all 18 games of Toronto’s run to the World Series, hitting .227 with three homers, including one in the World Series.”
Even before the injury setback, Varsho never produced the offensive turnaround the Astros were seeking. He hit .172/.224/.311 with five home runs in 151 at-bats after the trade.
With the wrist problem growing worse, Varsho will entered free agency without any opportunity to help Houston in October.
