The New York Mets reached a point where their postseason hopes gave way to a much different priority: reshaping the organization for the future.

That inflection point came early enough to push an unusually aggressive trade deadline, with the Mets moving established major league talent rather than trying to patch a team that had fallen short of expectations.

“All told, the Mets made seven notable deals in the weeks leading up to Monday’s Major League Trade Deadline,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo wrote in August. “The numbers are staggering for a Mets team that just turned over nearly a third of its active roster.”

Among those moves was the decision to send veteran starting pitcher Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays. At the time, the Mets were selling fairly low on the two-time All-Star, who appeared to have some significant issues with his execution on the mound. But Peralta’s subsequent performance marked a sudden turnaround and it forced an honest response from the Mets’ beleaguered top executive.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Freddy Peralta Turns Season Around After New York Mets Exit

Peralta struggled considerably with the Mets before the trade, going 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA through 22 starts and carrying a career-worst 1.478 WHIP. After arriving in Tampa Bay, however, the right-hander and the Rays worked through adjustments to his delivery and pitch mix while attempting to restore his confidence.

The results were dramatic and he seems to have earned himself a prominent role in Tampa Bay’s postseason rotation.

“Peralta, 30, went 5-0 with a 0.79 over his final six regular-season starts, including a 4-0, 0.96 ERA mark over five September outings, allowing one or zero runs in each start, to win the American League Pitcher of the Month honors announced Tuesday,” Marc Topkin reported for the Tampa Bay Times. “Over his 28 innings, he allowed 16 hits, struck out 23 and posted a 0.890 WHIP.”

New York Mets Boss David Stearns Addresses Tampa Bay Rays’ Freddy Peralta Fix

The turnaround naturally raised questions for Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, who was asked about Peralta during his end-of-season press conference.

“We were unable to get him to do what Tampa, through their processes, has been able to get him to,”Stearns acknowledged, according to DiComo. “I think the goals were the same.”

That assessment puts a notable coda on a trade that looked considerably different when Peralta left New York. The Rays now have a pitcher who finished the regular season among their most intriguing postseason options, while the Mets must evaluate what went wrong before deciding how to rebuild their pitching staff for 2027.

Peralta is also headed toward free agency, making his late-season transformation particularly significant for his next career decision.
