The United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced that Inverness Club will be the host site for the 2045 US Open. Inverness Club, located in Toledo, Ohio, will be hosting their fifth US Open, having previously hosted the event in 1920, 1931, 1957, and most recently in 1979 when Hale Irwin defeated Jerry Pate and Gary Player.
The USGA continues its track record of awarding USGA championship sites years in advance of the tournament dates. Future US Open sites have now been awarded for every year through 2042, as well as for select years through 2051. Venues for 2043 and 2046-2048 remain open.
The USGA cites planning, logistics, and preparation for picking venues so far in advance. In an article by GolfDigest, both the USGA and the PGA of America dismiss the notion that they compete for venues. The 2024 US Amateur, a USGA event, and the 2028 Ryder Cup, a PGA of America event, are both hosted by Hazeltine National Golf Club.
Inverness Club was founded in 1903 and in 1918, the championship course designed by famed architect Donald Ross was opened for play. The club has hosted numerous USGA championships including the US Opens listed above, the US Amateur in 1973, the US Junior Amateur in 2019, as well as a number of other championship events including the NCAA Men’s Championship and the Solheim Cup. The most recent major championship hosted at Inverness Club was the PGA Championship in 1993, where Paul Azinger held off Greg Norman in a playoff to win his sole major championship.
The championship course at Inverness Club has seen renovations over time. Most recently, architect Andrew Green completed a course restoration in 2018 to it’s original Ross championship character. The course then will play much differently from the last major championship hosted at Inverness Club, with additional strategic options coming from additional fairway width and expanded greens.
The 2045 US Open will be played June 15-18, 2045. However, fans won’t have to wait that long to watch major championship golf in Ohio, as the 2026 US Senior Open will be held at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.
