The first episode of Marshals, the latest Yellowstone spinoff and direct sequel to the popular neo-Western series, has arrived. The premiere features a shocking twist for a main character and forges a new path for Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton, who is leaving ranch life behind as he deals with grief.
Created by showrunner Spencer Hudnut with EPs Taylor Sheridan and David C. Glasse, the series takes place one year after the Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 finale. The story centers on Kayce, the youngest son of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who was killed last season. Kayce is a former Navy Seal and serves as Montana’s livestock commissioner.
After selling his father’s land back to the Indian reservation and keeping some for his family, his next chapter includes joining an elite U.S. Marshals unit. According to the synopsis, he will use his cowboy and Navy SEAL skills to bring justice to Montana. “He and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Before the premiere, Grimes told Entertainment Weekly that Marshals will have more action than Yellowstone ever did. “There was a bit of action here and there in Yellowstone, but this is an action show,” the actor said. The show has military consultants and writers who were SEALs.
Along with Grimes, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty and Gil Birmingham are reprising their roles in the spinoff. However, one familiar face viewers won’t see return is Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille). Find out what happened to Monica and why Kelsey Asbille is no longer in the Yellowstone franchise below.
