The Atlanta Braves have watched their margin for error shrink during a difficult stretch, with their grip on the National League East becoming less comfortable as the Philadelphia Phillies continue to gain ground.
The Braves were swept by the Minnesota Twins in their latest three-game series, losing Wednesday’s finale 6-4 and raising questions about whether they’d be able to hold onto a division lead down the stretch.
“It was one of their most uninspiring series of the season and has swung the door further open for the Phillies, who will enter play Wednesday evening just five games back in the National League East,” Gabriel Burnes wrote for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
That skid has made roster depth increasingly important, particularly behind the plate. The Braves have Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy atop their catching depth chart, but a brutal injury setback involving veteran backstop Sandy Leon has now forced the organization to seek out another experienced option.
And the Braves responded by bringing in a familiar face from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Atlanta Braves Add Los Angeles Dodgers Castoff With Veteran Lost For Season
On Tuesday, the Braves signed Chuckie Robinson to a minor league contract and immediately placed him in the lineup for Triple-A Gwinnett.
Robinson, 31, spent time with the Dodgers earlier this season and received a couple of brief opportunities in the majors. He went 2-for-23 across eight MLB games, continuing a career that has produced a .124/.157/.176 slash line over parts of four major league seasons.
But at Triple-A, Robinson has been considerably more productive, carrying a .264/.330/.408 career slash line.
And in any case, his offensive track record is hardly the reason Atlanta made the move. Robinson has been much more valuable as a defensive-minded catcher capable of working with a pitching staff, making him a logical insurance option for an organization trying to maintain depth during a postseason race. Particularly after the team lost veteran Sandy Leon for the season.
Atlanta Braves Veteran Sandy Leon Suffers Season-Ending Injury
The move became necessary after Gwinnett placed Leen on the 60-day injured list, effectively ruling the veteran catcher out for the remainder of the season.
Though he wasn’t much of a factor for the big-league mix this season, Leon carried significant experience, with 14 years in the big leagues and a World Series championship from his time with the Boston Red Sox.
Robinson now replaces Leon as non-roster catcher depth for the Braves, alongside Maverick Handley. Ultimately, that could give the Dodgers castoff a chance to remain in the major league picture after his latest stint in Los Angeles. And for the Braves, it’s a low-cost insurance move at an increasingly important position.
