Along With Adria Arjona, There’s Also DCU ‘Wonder Woman’ Director Buzz

Adria Arjona has a new action movie out this weekend, Onslaught, in the wake of a press tour where she has had to dance around questions that try to pin her down as the DCU’s Wonder Woman. Sharing her extreme workouts and playing a mystery character in the next Superman movie have only increased that speculation, and most are taking it for granted at this point. But now things are shifting to another question.

Who will direct Wonder Woman? If the superhero really is Arjona, we also know the writer, Supergirl scribe Ana Nogueira, which has produced some hesitation among fans, given the quality and performance of Supergirl. The final piece, however, a director, is not in place, and the word is that a Wonder Woman movie may start production after Man of Tomorrow in order to arrive sooner rather than later.

Variety is reporting that WB is indeed fast-tracking a Wonder Woman movie, but a fake tweet has been widely circulated, citing the article and claiming that Chloé Zhao is in talks to direct the film. The article says no such thing.

However, that did lead to something interesting with Zhao in any case. In a separate Variety article, an interview with Zhao, she talks about comic book movies after directing the infamous Marvel flop Eternals in 2021. She has no hard feelings and goes out of her way to defend the genre after others like Martin Scorsese have dismissed it:

“I do feel it’s important to not write off stories because we don’t consider them high art,” she said. “The purpose of storytelling for me, humbly, is to create containers for people … to try to process what they need to process. Archetypes are such a great way to do it — and we see them in myths — is because it’s something we all share.”

She even said that Eternals and Nomadland, the latter being her Oscar-winning movie that took home Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Director for her, were not even all that different in theme. “What contrast? It’s people in nature…with animals…who have complicated relationships with them.”

There is no direct connection between Chloé Zhao and Wonder Woman yet, but the timing is certainly significant as if that film really is being developed soon, a director would need to get on board. And given that it’s Wonder Woman, starring a woman and being written by a woman, the most famous female comic book character will probably be directed by a woman, as was the case with Patty Jenkins in the DCEU.

Yes, Eternals was a critical and box office flop, an entry in the MCU that was almost entirely disconnected from it. But there has been something of a resurgence in appreciation for the film, with many saying it was overly hated, and sharing scenes that were at least beautiful or action-packed, if nothing else. I don’t think anyone actually believes Zhao is a bad director because of that or unable to take a second shot at the genre.

None of this is confirmed, but out of all possible directors, a talented one who has played in the genre before and still seems open to it now, certainly seems like Chloé Zhao should be on the board. We’ll see if anything comes of this over the next year or so.
