The former US president’s son will launch one billion $LAPTOP tokens and offer free coins to some investors who lost money on $TRUMP

Hunter Biden is launching a memecoin called $LAPTOP, named after the infamous notebook that became the center of a political scandal during the 2020 US presidential campaign, his X post has indicated. The post features a video montage of media reports referencing the laptop and promotes a September 9 launch.

The device contained emails and financial records tied to the former US president’s son’s overseas business dealings, alongside explicit images and videos documenting his drug and alcohol use.

The token will launch on Coinbase’s Base network with a total supply of one billion coins, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. Biden and his fellow founders will control 30% of the supply, while another 20% has been earmarked for airdrops – free token distributions used by crypto projects to promote new coins.

Among those in line for free $LAPTOP tokens are subscribers to Biden’s Substack and video journalist Andrew Callaghan’s mailing list – as well as investors who lost money on US President Donald Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin. Unclaimed airdrop tokens will be permanently burned.

Memecoins are highly speculative assets and can lose value rapidly. The $LAPTOP project itself says the token has no utility or ownership rights and warns that digital-asset prices “can fall to zero.”

A further 30% of the total supply is tied to 30 political, crypto, and cultural predictions. Tokens will be burned if specified outcomes occur – including a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential election, Bitcoin reaching another record high or $LAPTOP overtaking $TRUMP in value – while tokens tied to outcomes that do not materialize will go to charity.

The offer to $TRUMP investors comes after Trump and his wife Melania launched their own memecoins shortly before his return to the White House in January 2025. Trump reported about $635 million in income from $TRUMP in 2025, while most investors lost money – nearly one million wallets were down a combined $3.8 billion by the end of June, according to crypto analytics firm Nansen.

Biden’s laptop became the center of a political scandal just weeks before the 2020 US presidential election, after the New York Post published emails purportedly taken from the device. The newspaper and Trump’s Republican allies alleged that Joe Biden had used his position as vice president to help his son’s business interests in Ukraine, where Hunter served on the board of energy company Burisma. Joe Biden denied involvement in his son’s business dealings.

The laptop’s authenticity itself soon became part of the story. Democrats and more than 50 former US intelligence officials claimed at the time that the laptop story had the “classic earmarks” of a Russian information operation, although the officials acknowledged they had no evidence of such involvement. Subsequent forensic reviews found no evidence of Russian interference and authenticated thousands of emails from the laptop data.

The laptop also contained explicit images and videos documenting Biden’s drug and alcohol use, some of which later featured in his federal gun trial. He was convicted on three felony gun charges in 2024 and pleaded guilty to separate tax offenses before his father granted him a sweeping federal pardon shortly before leaving office.
