The New York Yankees entered the second half of the season knowing that catching was a position that needed attention, but they still decided to part ways with a veteran backstop in a rare post-deadline move.
New York was searching for additional depth behind the plate throughout the summer, eventually signing veteran Mitch Garver to a minor league contract after failing to make a significant upgrade at the trade deadline. Still, the Yankees traded Christian Bethancourt to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations on August 19, giving the veteran another opportunity to reach the majors after deciding he wouldn’t play a role in the Bronx even at a shallow position.
Bethancourt’s return to the big leagues happened quickly, but now it has ended even more quickly.
New York Yankees’ Trade Castoff Sees Short-Lived Return End
The Yankees decision to trade Bethancourt wasn’t just notable because of his premier defensive position, but also because of its timing.
“The Pirates … acquired catcher Christian Bethancourt from the Yankees in exchange for cash considerations,” MLB.com’s Aiden Stepansky reported last month. “Bethancourt was not on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, which is why he could be traded after the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline.”
Bethancourt initially went to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he continued a long professional career that has included stops with numerous organizations. The 35-year-old showed some offensive ability in the minors, batting .270 with 14 home runs, 45 RBI and an .811 OPS across 230 at-bats in 2026.
The Pirates eventually selected his contract when rosters expanded September 1, giving Bethancourt another major league opportunity. But he never got into a game and was outrighted back to the minors less than a week later, according to the official transaction log.
Former New York Yankees Backstop Christian Bethancourt Continues Long And Winding Career
Though he briefly returned to the majors shortly after the Yankees trade, Bethancourt hasn’t seen any big-league game action since 2024, and it’s possible that the latest move will mark the end of his opportunities after an eight-year run in the majors.
“After signing a minor league deal with the (Chicago) Cubs last winter, Bethancourt moved on to another minors contract with the Yankees in July,” Mark Polishuk wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “He technically made it back to the majors when the Pirates selected his contract when rosters expanded on September 1, but Bethancourt was designated for assignment earlier this week without getting into a game.”
The timing also leaves him with a decision as the minor league season approaches its September 20 conclusion. With relatively little time remaining on the Triple-A schedule, Bethancourt could remain with Indianapolis through the end of the campaign before evaluating his options during the offseason. He could also reject the assignment and reach free agency more quickly.
Ultimately, the Pirates’ decision seems to justify the Yankees’ trade, suggesting that Bethancourt had very little chance of becoming a true factor in any big-league plans this season.
