Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay just set a record on Monday night, winning a total of 14 Emmys across categories, the most of any single season of a TV comedy series in history. That included winning Best Comedy, Best Actor for Matthew Rhys, Best Supporting Actor for Stephen Root, Best Supporting Actress for Kate O’Flynn and many more.
Widow’s Bay fans are celebrating, of course, but the question then turns to: when will there be more? When is season 2?
Well, we do have some season 2 release date updates that came just before all these Emmy wins. Here’s what we know:
- In an interview with Screenrant, star and now Emmy-winner Kate O’Flynn said that production on Widow’s Bay season 2 is set to begin hopefully around March 2027, which would be around six months from now.
- Production started on Widow’s Bay season 1 in June 2025, and the show premiered on April 29, 2026, around 10 months later.
- So, if production for season 2 starts in March 2027, 10 months after that would be a January 2028 release date. And January 2028 would be a one-year, eight-month wait between season 1 and season 2.
I mean, it could be worse. It’s a 10-episode comedy horror series, so if this was 10 years ago, it would have been no problem to get that out every 12 months. But today, a year-and-a-half gap is almost the bare minimum for most shows, and this looks to be close to that. Again, not ideal, but it’s not three years of a Severance season 2 wait, either. Pluribus, on the other hand, also an Emmy winner last night, is definitely pushing closer to three years until season 2.
I’m happy to see Widow’s Bay getting its due. It is no doubt going to see its profile rocket up as a result, past the ultra plugged-in Emmy-watching crowd and into a wider audience on Apple TV. Though it’s not as if the show needs an enormous surge in viewership to survive. A) It already has season 2 coming, obviously, and B) This is Apple TV, and it gave For All Mankind six seasons, and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it in real life (it’s good!). A show that wins 14 Emmys for Apple in its first year is going to exist until the cast dies of old age, should they choose to stick around.
If it wasn’t clear, Widow’s Bay is worth watching, and its entire main cast trio earned the top honors of the night, turning in incredible performances. Matthew Rhys in particular just won an Emmy for his comedic role on this show and, in the same night, won another for playing a serial killer on Netflix’s The Beast in Me, a limited series. And this is a man who already starred in one of the best shows ever, The Americans. What a run.
