The New York Mets are preparing for a significant decision in the dugout, with the organization expected to hire a new manager for the 2027 season.
After replacing Carlos Mendoza following a disappointing start this season, Andy Green has indicated that his preference is to return to a front-office role, leaving owner Steve Cohen to find a new option.
“Green indicated to The Athletic last month that nothing has changed in his desire to return to the front office, saying, ‘the family consideration is real,’” The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported. “The Mets are operating under the assumption they will need to hire a manager. The question is who.”
And one former manager with a notable connection to Green might have the answer to that question soon.

David Ross, the former Chicago Cubs manager and World Series-winning catcher, has emerged as a strong candidate to succeed Greed and he recently sent a clear, four-word message about how he views the potential job offer.
“‘I’ll answer the phone,’” David Ross said just now on ESPN in answer to whether he’d be interested in the Mets (or any other managerial job),” according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. “Ross, whose bench coach was Andy Green when he managed the Cubs, previously said as much to Dan Martin of (New York Post Sports).”
Ross might be a favorite candidate for the role because of his working relationship with Green, but he’s also seen as one of the more qualified potential managers around baseball following his latest tenure in the Cubs dugout.
“Ross has been out of a Major League dugout since the Cubs moved on from him following the 2023 season,” according to the Ledger-Enquirer. “He managed Chicago for four seasons and finished his tenure with a 262-284 record.”

Ross’ managerial resume is closely tied to one of the most memorable periods in recent Cubs history.
Chicago signed Ross before the 2015 season, giving him an opportunity to finish his playing career with the organization.
Ross later homered in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series against Cleveland, becoming the only player to hit a home run in his final at-bat of a Game 7 World Series while helping the Cubs capture their first championship since 1908.
The Cubs subsequently brought Ross into their baseball operations department before he returned as manager in 2020. Now, nearly three years after his Chicago tenure ended, Ross has signaled that he remains open to another opportunity with many expecting the Mets to come calling.
