Does Tottenham Hotspur Need A New Goalkeeper?

Tottenham Hotspur had a big summer. The North London club spent over €360m on transfers in the window with no fewer than 10 new players arriving for the 2026/27 season. All areas of the squad were strengthened with the exception of one – the goalkeeping position.

Guglielmo Vicario left to join Juventus on loan. The Italian had been Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper for a number of seasons, but lost the faith of Roberto De Zerbi after his appointment towards the end of the 2025/26 campaign. Instead of replacing Vicario, though, Spurs rolled with what the club already had.

Antonin Kinsky has played every minute of every game for Tottenham in the Premier League so far this season. Last season, the Czech goalkeeper played an important role for Spurs as they dragged themselves away from the threat of relegation when the club might have dropped down to the Championship.

In five league matches this season, though, Kinsky has struggled to reach the standards he set for himself before the summer. Tottenham has countless problems all over the field with De Zerbi’s side still searching for its first win of the new campaign, but the starting goalkeeper hasn’t helped matters.

It wasn’t so long ago that Kinsky’s Tottenham Hotspur career looked as good as over. His calamitous performance in a Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid was so bad that it essentially cost Spurs their place in the competition. Few expected that he would last at the North London club.

De Zerbi, however, quickly installed Kinsky as his first-choice goalkeeper and stuck with him for the start of the new season. “All I need is to hear that [De Zerbi] is confident in me, that he trusts in me, and that he gives me some time on the pitch,” said Kinsky when asked about the decision of his manager.

Spurs might have no choice, though, but to move for a new goalkeeper when the transfer window opens again. Hull City’s Konstantinos Tzolakis has been mentioned as a possible target after catching the eye for the Tigers in the early part of the season. The Greek goalkeeper is certainly good enough for the elite level.

Of course, there are still a number of months until the January transfer window opens and so Tottenham has no choice but to stick with Kinsky until then. The summer’s business also proves that spending big doesn’t always solve a problem. Kinsky has more time to prove he belongs to stay in De Zerbi’s lineup.
