Major League Baseball has increasingly looked for special settings to showcase the sport in one-off regular season matchups, but its recently reported interest in a new potential venue for a game would take that concept somewhere it has never gone before.
The league and the Trump administration have explored the possibility of staging an MLB game at Grand Teton National Park, according to reporting that has already prompted questions about how such an event could fit with the mission of the National Park Service.
“The administration has scouted locations in Grand Teton National Park to build a baseball park to host an MLB game,” the Washington Post’s Jake Spring and Stephanie Apstein reported last week. “National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands visited Grand Teton National Park in recent days and looked at three potential locations for a baseball park within the park’s boundaries, the two people familiar with the matter said.”
Though there don’t appear to be any concrete plans to host an MLB game at a national park in the near future, the report has drawn some heated opposition, including from at least one Wyoming state senator who represents the area that was singled out.
“It’s abhorrent,” Democratic Wyoming state senator Mike Gierau, who represents Grand Teton, told the Associated Press. “Baseball is the American game. The national parks are America’s greatest idea. But a national park is to be protected for its undeveloped and scenic values.”
MLB, Donald Trump Administration National Park Game Report Draws Pushback
The idea would follow MLB’s recent effort to take regular-season games to distinctive locations, including the Field of Dreams site in Iowa and Rickwood Field in Alabama.
MLB has already also announced that the Field of Dreams event will return in 2027, when the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox are scheduled to play in a corn field in Dyersville, Iowa. MLB’s published 2027 schedule suggests a Grand Teton game would not be part of the existing slate.
And a White House official told the Associated Press that the idea for a game at a national park manifested with MLB, rather than the administration. The official also said the proposal was not a presidential directive and that the National Park Service had not granted any permits, emphasizing that the administration is not necessarily in favor of the concept.
Following Report, Grand Teton National Park MLB Game Remains Far From Certain
The potential for an MLB game hosted at a national park like Grand Teton has nevertheless created an unusual intersection between baseball’s effort to expand its reach and the longstanding purpose of America’s national parks.
MLB has successfully turned unconventional venues into major events before, but those projects generally relied on existing facilities or locations specifically adapted for baseball. A Grand Teton game would raise additional questions about construction, environmental impact and what infrastructure would be required for a major professional sporting event.
For now, the league’s interest appears to remain at the exploratory stage. But with Trump administration officials acknowledging the interest from MLB, some local representatives are already pushing back.
