Netflix’s best new movie this week is a harrowing film that landed a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, and will stick in your memory.

Finally, there’s a Netflix original movie that’s reviewing well, not a licensed production like Top Gun: Maverick or The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, for instance. It also has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes review score, though there is a catch here.
The movie is The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part, which you may be able to deduce is not a scripted film but rather a true crime story. There aren’t that many reviews in yet, but the ones that are in give it a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Unlike many other true crime entries on Netflix, this one is not split into a 2-3-part miniseries but is a 90-minute feature.
The case in question for The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part is that of Thomas Randolph in 2008. He called 911 and said that his wife, Sharon Causse, had been shot (his sixth wife!). The story was that there was a home invader who shot his wife, then Randolph shot and killed the invader himself. It seemed like a robbery gone wrong, and not all that suspicious.
However, what resulted was a sprawling 15-year hunt for the truth, and it was discovered he had gotten three life-insurance hauls from three of his previous wives who also died. He became known as the “Black Widower” and after dodging a number of legal runs at him, was ultimately sentenced to 60 years in prison. Since then, he’s had a number of appeals denied. Here’s how the film is described:
“In this documentary, a journalist and a detective uncover the truth about a killer whose charm masked a trail of failed marriages and suspicious deaths.”
True crime stories do exceedingly well on Netflix, and this one, with its high scores and intriguing subject matter, has debuted at No. 1, unseating the (very bad) Unabomber movie. That was not a true crime film, but rather a dramatized account of the bomber’s early life and eventual crimes. Very, very poor critic scores for that one.
The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part is the only true crime story on either the TV or movie lists right now, which is a bit surprising, given how many of these Netflix puts out on practically a weekly basis. It may have some defending to do as Netflix has just added well-watched classics like Jason Bourne and Twilight that are creeping up from the bottom. But again, these kinds of stories tend to do very well on Netflix for a very long time, and we will see how much staying power it has. Additionally, more reviews may come in and change its score, but for now, it’s perfect.
