The New York Mets enter the offseason with a roster in need of a reset after a 2026 season that fell well short of expectations. The organization now has to determine which pieces can help it return to the postseason and which should be moved aside in favor of younger players who could form the foundation of a more sustainable contender.
“Coming off back-to-back disappointing seasons — with disappointing being an understatement when describing what the 2026 campaign was — the Mets enter this offseason looking to get back on track,” Danny Abriano wrote for SNY. “The initial goal, which has been the same since Steve Cohen took over as owner, is to get back to the playoffs. The ultimate goal is to become a team that is in the postseason perennially.”
As the Mets prepare for a busy winter, the team did already make some progress on resetting its roster at the trade deadline. Among a flurry of moves, the Mets traded frontline starter Freddy Peralta away to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for three prospects who could become key to the Mets’ next chapter.
Peralta, meanwhile, has made it clear he has been thrilled with the aftermath of that trade.

After struggling with the Mets, the veteran right-hander has suddenly looked much more like the pitcher New York expected when it acquired him — and he also appears to be considerably happier in his new surroundings with the Rays.
“I think it’s been amazing,” Peralta said of his exit from Queens to the Rays during a recent MLB Network appearance. “I’m very grateful to be here and for the people that have been taking care of me at this time.”
Peralta added that his confidence is now at a high and he praised the defenders who play behind for the Rays. Ultimately, without mentioning the Mets, Peralta made it clear that he is happy with his new home.
Tampa Bay Rays’ Freddy Perala Snaps Back After New York Mets Trade
Peralta, who was among several disappointing star performers for the Mets this year, almost instantly saw his fortunes change after the trade.
“After a rocky stint with the Mets and a shaky introduction with the Rays, Peralta is 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA over his last six starts,” Adam Berry reported for MLB.com.
For the Mets, the trade ultimately becomes a question of what the young pieces acquired from the Rays can become in the future. For Peralta, meanwhile, the move has provided an opportunity to rediscover the form that made him such a significant addition in New York in the first place.
His own assessment suggests he has found more than just better results in Tampa Bay.
