Fans have been waiting for The Batman Part II for four years now, and thought they were less than two more away. We’ll see if that still happens, but now, production has paused on The Batman: Part II due to director Matt Reeves needing to step away for personal reasons. DC Studios released the following statement as the news broke:

“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

There are no further details beyond this, including the potential length of the pause. The Batman Part II is scheduled for release on February 18. 2028. This is after a large number of lengthy delays where the film moved from:

  • October 2025 to October 2026
  • October 2026 to October 2027
  • October 2027 to February 2028

Fans just “celebrated” the anniversary of when the film was supposed to be released over the last two years, as we reached October. Any production freeze certainly has many thinking that it could result in further delays. Though obviously the priority is for Reeves to deal with his family matter, as it must be significant given the situation.

DC Studios head James Gunn has repeatedly defended Matt Reeves over the years, saying everything from the fact that it’s not unusual for sequels to go this many years between films, or that it’s a poor idea to rush the creative process. Here’s a quote from Entertainment weekly back in June 2025.

“People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I am irritated by people… It’s just that thing people don’t need to be entitled about. It’s going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay.”

Filming has not yet wrapped on The Batman Part II, so the production pause is not post-production, to be clear. Set shots of Robert Pattinson and the Batmobile have been slowly leaking out the past few weeks in particular. The film features other A-listers, including Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson, in as-yet-unconfirmed roles.

All the best to Matt Reeves and his family matter. That should take priority over any fixed release date, despite delays thus far, though we don’t even know if that’s happening yet.
