The New York Yankees are facing their biggest challenge of the postseason after falling into an 0-2 hole against the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series. After a difficult showing in Game 2, New York now has no margin for error heading into Wednesday’s Game 3 at Yankee Stadium and have looked virtually lifeless in the series so far.

“Now the Yankees, who have never truly threatened at any point this series, must win three straight to survive and advance to the ALCS,” Deesha Thosar noted for Fox Sports. “The Rays are just one win away from advancing to the ALCS for the first time since 2020, when they lost to the (Los Angeles) Dodgers in the Fall Classic.”

That makes Max Fried’s scheduled start in Game 3 especially important, but there is now a personal consideration that could affect New York’s pitching plans.

New York Yankees’ Max Fried Decision Comes With Personal Consideration

When the Yankees acquired Fried with a $218 million free agent contract ahead of last season, they envisioned him starting some critical playoff games. And he seems to be the Yankees’ best option behind breakout star Cam Schlittler.

“The club plans to start Fried for Wednesday’s Game 3 followed by Carlos Rodon for Thursday’s Game 4, if the Yankees can get it there, manager Aaron Boone said Monday before a slop-filled 5-2 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field,” Greg Joyce reported for the New York Post. “Fried would pitch on six days of rest.”

But Fried might not be available for the must-win matchup after a personal update, leaving the team with Rodon as their best option.

“One potential caveat: Fried’s girlfriend is due to give birth in a few days,” the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported on Monday. “Rodon, slated for Game 4, is the other option.”

The Yankees cannot afford another loss, yet Fried and his family are approaching a major moment of their own.

Fried’s availability became even more important when the Yankees lost their first two games of the series behind Gerrit Cole and then Schlittler. The Yankees now need one of their most experienced postseason pitchers to reverse the momentum against a Rays team that has controlled the matchup from the beginning.

For Fried, that means taking the ball in one of the most important starts of the Yankees’ season while also navigating an intensely personal situation away from the field.

The Yankees have already received strong postseason work from Fried, who helped them eliminate the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Series. Now, however, the stakes are considerably higher.
