The Jessica Chastain horror thriller Other Mommy is projected to trounce Jeremy Strong’s Facebook drama The Social Reckoning as both films open in wide theaters this weekend at the box office.
Directed by Rob Savage, Other Mommy stars Chastain as Ursula and her evil doppelganger, who terrorizes the former’s 8-year-old daughter, Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark). Rated R, Other Mommy also stars Jay Duplass, Karen Allen and Dichen Lachman.
Meanwhile, The Social Reckoning hits theaters 16 years after its predecessor, 2010’s Facebook drama The Social Network opened and went on to score eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Jeremy Strong replaces Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg in the follow-up.
The Social Reckoning stars Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen, a Facebook engineer who teams with a Wall Street Journal reporter (Jeremy Allen White) to blow the whistle on the social media conglomerate’s most guarded secrets. Aaron Sorkin, who won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for The Social Network, penned the script for The Social Reckoning and took over directing duties from David Fichher, who helmed the 2010 films.
In its weekend projections for both new films on Wednesday, Deadline estimates that Other Mommy will open with $20 million in ticket sales from 3,200 North American theaters, while it forecasts an $8 million debut for The Social Reckoning from 2,200 domestic locations.
The projections seem to fall in line with the forecasts from Box Office Pro, which estimates a $17 million to $22 million opening for Other Mommy and a $6 million to $10 million bow for The Social Reckoning.
In its forecast of all October films released last week, Box Office Theory projected a much bigger $31 million opening for Other Mommy, while pegging an $8 million debut for The Social Reckoning.

Anne Hathaway’s ‘Verity’ Projected To Drop To No. 2
Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, is projected by Deadline to take a 60% dive in its second weekend in North American theaters to earn $12 million.
The adaptation of author Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller of the same name, Verity opened at No. 1 last weekend with $32 million in domestic ticket sales, far outpacing Tom Cruise’s box office bomb Digger, which earned a paltry $8 million in its debut frame.
Box Office Pro projects a healthier second weekend for Verity with a forecast of anywhere from $15 million to $20 million in domestic ticket sales.
The Angel Studios Western Angel and the Badman — starring Tommy Lee Jones, Neal McDonough and Zachary Levi — is also new in theaters this weekend and will debut in 2,000 North American locations.
In addition, Fathom Entertainment is bringing Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth to just over 1,000 North American venues to celebrate the classic horror fantasy’s 20th anniversary.
