The Toronto Blue Jays have plenty to address this offseason after a disappointing follow-up to their American League championship run, with the departure of longtime franchise star Bo Bichette among the changes that reshaped the roster.
Bichette left Toronto in free agency for the New York Mets, signing a three-year, $126 million contract that gave him an opportunity to begin a new chapter in one of baseball’s biggest markets. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, struggled to replicate the success of their 2025 season and entered the offseason with significant questions about their roster.
Now, both sides have some big decisions to make this winter, with Bichette facing a critical opt out decision on his blockbuster contract.
“The Mets owe Bichette $84 million over the next two years,” Jeff Passan noted for ESPN. “If he opts out, he will get a $5 million buyout and hit free agency again going into his age-29 season hopeful that the mediocrity of the rest of the class makes him stand out in ways he didn’t last winter.”
But while Bichette’s contract decision remains a major storyline for the Mets, his latest comments suggest that his first season away from Toronto has given him plenty of reasons to remain comfortable in New York.
New York Mets Star Bo Bichette Sends Personal Message On Leaving Toronto Blue Jays
Bichette’s first season with the Mets was hardly seamless. He endured a difficult opening stretch before settling in offensively, and his future now depends partly on whether he believes the opportunity to return to free agency is more attractive than remaining under the his contract.
Yet his personal experience in a new city for the first time in his career was a positive one.
“My wife loves living there,” Bichette told the New York Post’s Mike Puma, referring to New York City, in a personal update that suggests he’d be comfortable staying with the Mets. “I like living there. It’s a comfortable situation for us.”
The comments offered perhaps the clearest indication yet that Bichette’s decision will involve more than simply comparing potential contracts.
For Toronto, meanwhile, the contrast is notable. Bichette spent seven seasons with the Blue Jays after being selected by the organization in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, developing into a two-time All-Star and one of the central figures of the franchise before departing for New York.
Toronto Blue Jays Face Offseason Questions After Bo Bichette’s New York Mets Decision
The Blue Jays’ offensive struggles after Bichette’s exit are likely to dominate their offseason.
“The reigning American League champions couldn’t even manage a winning record in 2026, as the Blue Jays fell to 79-83 and last place in the AL East,” Mark Polishuk wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “The Jays were set back by a ton of injuries, but beyond just hoping for improved health, the club needs to fix a lackluster offense.”
That leaves Toronto trying to determine how much of its roster needs to change after losing one of its most recognizable stars.
For Bichette, however, the picture is considerably different. He now has a decision to make about whether to remain with the Mets or test a free-agent market that could value him differently after his uneven first season in New York.
His latest comments suggest that, at least personally, leaving Toronto has not created much regret. If anything, Bichette appears to have found a level of comfort with the Mets that could make his looming decision far more complicated.
