The New York Yankees entered the postseason with another opportunity to end one of the longest championship droughts in franchise history, but their season ended with more questions than answers after a disappointing sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays.
That early playoff exit immediately shifted attention toward the offseason and the personnel decisions that could determine whether New York is finally capable of returning to the World Series.
“As has been the case on an annual basis in recent years, the immediate question is whether the Yankees will stick with Aaron Boone as manager or shake things up,” Kerry Miller wrote for Bleacher Report. “He has one year left on the extension they gave him two Februaries ago, but the seat is hotter than ever. Once that part is settled, though, it’ll be on to the roster moves meant to end this embarrassing drought.”
For franchise slugger Aaron Judge, the response should be more aggressive. The Yankees captain made it clear that he wants the front office to treat this latest postseason disappointment as a catalyst to make major changes.
New York Yankees Slugger Aaron Judge Sends Front Office Message Immediately After Exit
Judge, who missed the postseason because of injury, sent a blunt message to the team’s front office when asked how he wanted New York’s front office to respond to the latest playoff disappointment.
“We’re the Yankees,” Judge said. “I feel like (the front office) should go all-in and do what they need to do. If we’ve got holes, if it’s finding certain players or personnel, whatever we need, you’ve got to go out there and get it.”
Though the Yankees’ large payroll didn’t help them beat the much more frugal Rays, Judge clarified that he was imploring his team’s executives to get aggressive with additions once the free agency period opens up.
“I want to trade for everybody, sign everybody every single year, but I know that’s not realistic,” Judge added, according to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo. “So they give us a winning team every single year, but that’s not good enough here in New York. We’re the Yankees. We got to go out there and win championships and go all-in every year. So I’m excited to see what they do.”
New York Yankees Face Major Offseason Decisions After Aaron Judge Message
Judge’s comments put pressure on a front office that will have several opportunities to reshape the roster. New York has established pieces around Judge, including a deep starting rotation and several promising young players, but the sweep exposed areas that could require additional investment.
The Yankees have a number of impending free agents, including second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., center fielder Trent Grisham and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, while the bullpen could face significant turnover as well.
That leaves the front office with a familiar challenge: determine whether the current core needs targeted additions or whether a more dramatic overhaul is necessary.
