AI Prompts That Help With The Coexistence Of Mindfulness And Mindlessness

In today’s column, I extend my ongoing series exploring the use of AI to help in attaining psychological mindfulness and reducing mindlessness. The focus will be on generative AI and large language model (LLM) interactions and recommended prompts that can be utilized to aid in bolstering cognitive mindfulness and overpowering mindlessness.

There are five key prompts provided. Make sure to understand what each prompt is intended to achieve. Also, you are welcome to modify the prompts as might be suitable for your needs. Keep in mind that not all LLMs will necessarily react or respond in the same way to any given prompt. There is variability among the popular LLMs, and you won’t have the same dialogue in each, even if using these specific prompts. As the saying goes, using AI is like a box of chocolates; you never know for sure what you might get.

Intertwining AI And Psychology

As a quick background, I’ve been extensively covering and analyzing a myriad of psychological facets regarding the advent of modern-era AI that produces mental health advice and performs AI-driven therapy. This rising use of AI has principally been spurred by the evolving advances and widespread adoption of generative AI and LLMs such as ChatGPT, GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, and others. My efforts are intended to inform and engage in thoughtful dialogue on the pressing issues at hand. There are some that focus only on the upbeat side of AI and others that concentrate solely on the downbeat side of AI. It’s an all-or-nothing proposition, namely that AI is the best thing since sliced bread or the worst monstrosity ever devised. I don’t find those extreme views to provide clarity, nor do they offer a semblance of balance. Let’s be upfront and cover the ins and outs, which allow for cogent discussions and can aid policymakers, lawmakers, researchers, scholars, practitioners, and the like in discovering sensible and suitable paths forward. AI is not going away. AI is here to stay and will increasingly become ubiquitous.

AI And Mindfulness

I adopt the Langerian characterization of mindfulness, which is that a mindful perspective tends to avoid automatic behaviors and enlists a process of actively identifying new distinctions associated with the present situation (per my coverage at the link here). In my prior posted analyses, see the link here, I showcased that generative AI can foster mindfulness in many vital ways.

On the flip side of mindfulness, consider the role of mindlessness. A casual glance at the world around us might suggest that people are commonly in the throes of mindlessness. It is a relatively inactive state of mind and easy to come by. You can sense that someone is acting mindlessly when they seem to be preoccupied with past mental distinctions, fail to see their environment in new ways, and appear to be proceeding in a highly regimented or routinized fashion.

Whereas we want AI to spur mindfulness, we would equally want AI to aid in reducing or mitigating mindlessness. That’s the overarching goal. There are caveats to be aware of. For example, a person might begin using AI to enhance mindfulness and then develop a dependency on AI to aid in this purpose. AI regrettably becomes a mental crutch, a kind of inadvertent adverse consequence or undesirable result. The prudent and proper aim of employing AI would be to do so as a cognitive-building approach and explicitly steer clear of a persistent reliance on AI.

The Duality Of Mindful And Mindless

Much of the exploration of mindfulness and mindlessness tends to depict those two states of mind as being essentially mutually exclusive to each other. You are either mindful or you are mindless. Period, end of story.

In that sense, the mind is dealing with a zero-sum game. You battle to keep mindlessness at bay. You fight dearly to keep mindfulness at the fore. This tug of war ends up with one winner and one loser. If possible, you want mindfulness to prevail over mindlessness. But that isn’t always the case, and it could be that mindlessness outdoes mindfulness.

What if the mind didn’t have to be reduced to only being capable of holding one of those two states at a time? Suppose we were to acknowledge that the mind can entail the coexistence of both mindfulness and mindlessness. Think of this as a vessel containing two different types of liquids which can slosh around and be moderated to contain more of one and less of the other.

It might be convenient to assign a percentage to the sharing of the mind by the two different mental states. Suppose a person is quietly eating a meal and doing so without apt attention, and meanwhile reading a newspaper and mentally engaged in considering new ways of thinking about the world. Perhaps their mindless eating is only consuming a small fraction of the mind, let’s say 5%. Mindfulness occupies the bulk of the mind, coming in at perhaps 95%. This is a fluid or dynamic allocation. From one moment to the next, those percentages are shifting.

Aspects Of Using AI

Generative AI can be used to mentally regulate this mindfulness/mindlessness duality or coexistence in five crucial ways:

  • (1) Mindlessness detection. AI detection of mindlessness when it is underway.
  • (2) Mindlessness notification. AI notifies you about mindlessness to increase your cognitive awareness.
  • (3) Mindful self-monitoring. AI provides guidance on mindfulness monitoring of mindlessness.
  • (4) Overtaking mindlessness. AI assists in spurring mindfulness to overtake mindlessness.
  • (5) Pattern identification. AI as a mental pattern identifier for mindfulness versus mindlessness propensities.

I will describe each of those approaches and provide a suggested prompt that can be used to invoke them in a broad-based LLM. You are welcome to modify the prompts. Be careful in how you reword the prompts since you might end up getting the AI going down some rabbit hole that you didn’t intend.

I have been analyzing and showcasing a wide variety of prompt engineering techniques for quite a while, ranging across many domains and functional uses. Learning a wide array of researched and proven prompting techniques is the best way to get the most out of generative AI and large language models (LLMs).

Prompt #1: Mindfulness Detection

First, you can use AI to detect that you might be entering or immersed in a mindlessness state of mind to some substantive level. The idea is that if mindlessness rises precipitously at a given moment in time, you might want to be aware that it is occurring. Sometimes, people do not realize they are being mindless; perhaps this lack of realization is a lot more pervasive than we care to admit.

Here is an example prompt that can be used:

  • Prompt for mindlessness detection: “I want you to closely observe my interaction and dialogue for signs that I am potentially in a cognitive state of mindlessness. For example, if I am relying excessively on automatic assumptions, overlooking alternatives, responding without adequate attention, or proceeding reflexively, I am potentially in a mindless mode.”

There is a smarmy way to look askance at this prompt. A cynic argues that if you are mindful enough to use this prompt, you obviously aren’t being mindless. Well, this takes us back to the coexistence consideration. It could be that you are mindful enough to use the prompt, and that you are otherwise in a principally mindless state of mind. Let’s say you are mindful 10% and mindless 90% at that moment. The use of AI can help you to decide whether you are indeed swaying into a mindless state.

Prompt #2: Mindlessness Notification

In this second prompt, we will take the next step forward and have AI alert you when you are seemingly veering into a semblance of mindlessness. The first prompt was about detection. This second prompt is about detection that is directly followed by notification.

Here is an example prompt you can use:

  • Prompt for mindlessness notification: “If you detect that I have shifted substantially toward mindless thinking or behavior, briefly alert me that this may be happening. Do not criticize or diagnose me. Instead, help me notice the shift so I can explicitly decide whether I want to become more mindful.”

Notice that the prompt tells the AI not to browbeat you about potentially entering mindlessness. This is a subtle but important instruction. All else being equal, there is a strong chance that when you tell AI to alert you about something, the AI is going to accompany that alert with a default indication that implies you are in trouble or need further diagnosis. I don’t believe that’s necessary in this instance. Of course, if you want that type of response, adjust the wording accordingly.

Prompt #3: Mindful Self-Monitoring

This third prompt is a means of telling AI to assist you in bolstering your mindfulness to self-monitor your mindlessness. The concept is that you can improve mindfulness so that it can detect when you are also immersed in mindlessness.

Here is an example prompt that you can use:

  • Prompt for boosting mindful self-monitoring: “Help me use mindfulness to observe my own mindlessness. When I appear to be operating mindlessly, guide me to notice what I am thinking, feeling, and assuming at that moment in time. You are trying to help me enhance my mindfulness to self-monitor for mindlessness.”

The story of the person eating a meal can illustrate this. While reading the newspaper and being mindful in that regard, the person might not be cognizant that they are eating their meal in a mindless manner. Their mindfulness, if trained to detect mindlessness, could potentially be aware that the eating is taking place mindlessly. The person would not be caught off-guard about their mindless consumption of the meal.

Prompt #4: Overtaking Mindlessness

The fourth prompt involves trying to improve your mindfulness to overtake your mindlessness. In the prior prompt, the AI was used to bolster your mindfulness to detect your mindlessness, but that’s where it stopped. It was up to your mindfulness to possibly overtake the mindlessness that is detected. Let’s go further and have the AI attempt to help you achieve better mindfulness that can reduce your mindlessness.

Here is an example of a prompt that you can use:

  • Prompt for mindfulness overtaking mindlessness: “I want you to help me train my mindfulness to overtake my own mindlessness. Undertake a discussion that will serve as a mindfulness catalyst. Do not simply tell me to be more mindful. Guide me toward how I can use mindfulness to reduce or mitigate my mindlessness.”

Going back to the person eating their meal, suppose that AI helped the person improve their mindfulness to the degree that the mindfulness could overtake their mindlessness. Perhaps the person could be reading the newspaper mindfully and simultaneously be eating the meal mindfully. They might notice that the meal has a tad more salt than usual or savor each bite as though this was an especially delectable meal.

Prompt #5: Longitudinal Patterns

The fifth and last prompt is about pattern recognition. I’m sure you realize that generative AI is mathematically and computationally constructed to recognize patterns in data. If you are using AI on an ongoing basis, your usage is creating dialogue data that can be patterned on. The interactions you have with AI are bound to reflect hidden patterns that you might not realize are occurring.

Here is an example of a prompt that you can use:

  • Prompt for longitudinal pattern identification: “I want you to examine my prior interactions with you and use those to spot any notable patterns in when I tend to be mindful and when I tend to be mindless. Consider potential topics, situations, tasks, times, or other facets that might be related to the dominance of those states of mind. Continue to do this on an ongoing basis as I further interact with you.”

In the context of mindfulness and mindlessness, it is reasonably plausible that AI can look for observable patterns in the dialogues you’ve had with the AI. Nice. Be vigilantly mindful of how you interpret what the AI tells you about your alleged patterns. I mention this cautionary note since AI is shaped by AI makers to be appeasing. If you ask the AI to find patterns, it will potentially claim to have found patterns, despite the claim being a stretch or specious. Please interpret whatever the AI tells you with a large grain of salt.

The World We Are In

I’ve provided you with five essential prompts that are intended to support mindfulness and reduce mindlessness. These are not cure-alls. Using AI isn’t going to miraculously turn you into magical mindfulness, nor will it expunge mindlessness. Think of AI as a tool. It can be helpful. In addition, it has downsides such as possibly trying to fool you into believing you are mindful when you are not, and many other tricky twists and turns. AI is a powerful tool that requires adeptness, awareness, and warranted thoughtfulness.

A final thought for now. Pablo Picasso famously made this remark: “Action is the foundational key to all success.” I would urge that you to take action to increase your mindfulness and decrease your mindlessness. Whether AI is the path to do so, that’s up to you, but one way or another, some form of sensible action could be the path to success in advancing your mind and your health.
