The Toronto Blue Jays have spent much of the 2026 season trying to recapture the formula that carried them to the American League pennant last year. While injuries have affected several key contributors, few developments have been more frustrating for fans than the instability at the back end of the bullpen.
For much of 2025, Jeff Hoffman gave Toronto exactly what it hoped for when the club signed him in free agency. The veteran reliever emerged as one of the most important pieces of a team that reached the World Series, handling high-leverage situations throughout the season and into October.
But Hoffman gave up a game-tying home run in Game 7 of the World Series last year and that poor momentum seemed to plague him into this season as well.
In April, the Blue Jays announced they were removing Hoffman as closer after a difficult start to the year and turning ninth-inning opportunities over to a committee approach led by Louis Varland. At the time, manager John Schneider emphasized that the move was designed to help Hoffman regain his footing rather than serve as a permanent judgment on his future role.
“He’s still a damn good pitcher,” Schneider said at the time, per MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson. “I don’t want to lose sight of that.”

Now, one of the most accomplished relievers in franchise history has weighed in on the situation.
“When it doesn’t work for you, you have to get over it and sometimes that’s hard to do,” Tom Henke told the Toronto Sun’s Steve Simmons, referring to Hoffman. “You have to think, the Blue Jays wouldn’t have been there had it not been for Hoffman. He has to know that. But sometimes your career is defined by one miscue. It’s not really fair.”
Henke’s comments carried particular significance because he spent years navigating the same pressures Hoffman is currently experiencing. Closers often operate under a unique level of scrutiny, with a single mistake capable of defining an entire season or postseason run.

Henke’s message reflected the reality that many relievers face after a highly public setback. In Hoffman’s case, the inability to recover from his World Series miscue has resulted in Louis Varland taking over the closer role this season.
Henke remains the Blue Jays’ all-time saves leader with 217 saves and was one of the franchise’s most dominant relievers during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Whether Hoffman ultimately regains the closer role remains to be seen. But as the Blue Jays continue their playoff push, Henke’s perspective serves as a reminder that even the most accomplished relievers endure difficult stretches — and that the ability to move past them often determines how the story ends.
