Toronto Blue Jays reliever Jeff Hoffman’s name has resurfaced in trade speculation as the early August deadline approaches, with the Philadelphia Phillies among the clubs linked to a need for bullpen reinforcements.
Given his success in Philadelphia before joining the Toronto Blue Jays, the push for a potential trade reunion between the two has become an increasingly popular topic.
The timing is notable because Hoffman has quietly turned around what had been an inconsistent season. And his old team is suddenly in need of some bullpen reinforcement following a season-ending injury to Brad Keller. Recently, the idea of the Phillies trading to reacquire Hoffman from the Blue Jays generated some debate on social media.
And while trade rumors continue to swirl, Hoffman himself pointed to one of the biggest reasons behind his resurgence on the mound by sending a message about his former team.

Hoffman has been one of the Blue Jays’ best relievers in recent weeks after blowing a save in Game 7 of last year’s World Series and then enduring an uneven start to this season.
“Jeff Hoffman found a groove in recent weeks,” Mitch Bannon noted for The Athletic. “After losing his closing job early in the season, Hoffman has posted a 1.62 ERA since June 1 with 21 strikeouts to six walks and eight hits. The righty attributes the improvement to a mix of his pitch usage, including more sliders and becoming generally more unpredictable.”
According to the pitcher, those adjustments were a callback to the success he enjoyed with the Phillies, where he emerged as one of baseball’s top setup men in the sport.
“Just kind of keeping them in that rocking chair,” as Hoffman described his approach, per Bannon. “I think that’s what made me great a couple years in Philly.”

With Hoffman acknowledging that the best seasons of his career came in Philadelphia, he might add some momentum to an increasing push among fans and analysts for a trade reunion in the near future.
“With Keller landing on the IL, Philadelphia could turn to the Toronto Blue Jays for a potential reunion with an old friend. That pitcher is none other than Jays reliever Jeff Hoffman,” Ben Wrixon wrote for Jays Journal. “Perhaps a potential change of scenery by returning to his old stomping grounds can help him rediscover his previous dominant form. As for the Phillies, they can benefit by having Hoffman become their short and long-term solution for however long Keller will be out.”
While things have not gone as smoothly since Hoffman departed Philadelphia after the 2024 season, his recent turnaround has reminded evaluators why he became such a valuable late-inning arm in the first place. His ability to miss bats and keep hitters off balance has returned, potentially boosting his value ahead of the deadline.
Whether the Blue Jays ultimately become buyers or sellers will help determine Hoffman’s future. But by pointing back to the approach that made him successful with the Phillies, the veteran right-hander has delivered a timely reminder of what he could still offer — and why a reunion has become a realistic talking point.
