Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, is projected to have the biggest opening weekend at the box office in 2026, a factor that will no doubt come into play when its studio, Sony Pictures Entertainment, releases the film on streaming.

Directed by Deston Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Holland’s first solo Spidey movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in December 2021.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to examine one of the most pivotal events of No Way Home, when Peter Parker/Spider-Man asks Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to erase the planet’s memory of him in a desperate move to save the multiverse. But as Peter tries to reconnect with his love, MJ (Zendaya), and his best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), he’s also dealing with an elusive new villain threatening New York City.

Rated PG-13, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colón-Zayas, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Will Likely Follow Sony’s PVOD Strategy For ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Generally, most films from Sony Pictures Entertainment have a one-month-to six-week theatrical window before they are released for purchase or rent on digital streaming via premium video on demand.

For example, in 2026, Sony’s horror thriller 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was released in theaters on Jan. 16 and made its debut on PVOD on Feb. 17, just over a month after its release in theaters. More recently, the Sony family comedy The Breadwinner was released on PVOD on July 14, about six weeks after the film’s May 29 theatrical premiere.

However, since Spider-Man franchise is among Sony’s crown jewels, the studio has in the past few years handled its home entertainment plans a bit differently. For example, Sony’s blockbuster hit Spider-Man: No Way Home was released on Dec. 17, 2021, but did not make its debut on PVOD until nearly three months later, on March 15, 2022.

Even the studio’s animated Spidey film, 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, had a bigger theatrical window than most Sony films. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was released on the big screen on June 2, 2023, did not make its debut on PVOD until just over two months later, on Aug. 8, 2023.

Since Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to become another monster hit for Sony (No Way Home made $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office), don’t expect to the studio to rush the film to the home entertainment marketplace anytime soon.

Opening in nearly 4,500 North American theaters this weekend, early projections for Spider-Man: Brand New Day range from as little as $180 million to $190 million domestically in the film’s opening weekend frame, to as much as $230 million to $250 million.

As such, viewers can expect a similar theatrical window as Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was roughly three months long (or 88 days or 13 weekends to be exact). Should the new Spider-Man film follow the same release pattern as its live-action predecessor, Spider-Man: Brand New Day should premiere on or around Oct. 27, since new films on PVOD typically come out on Tuesdays.

In addition, because of the continuing Pay-1 deal the platform has with Sony, Netflix will be the first streaming platform to offer Spider-Man: Brand New Day when it comes to streaming video on demand.

Since Sony had a Pay-1 deal with Starz in 2022, a Pay-1 release pattern for Sony’s live-action Spider-Man films on Netflix has not yet been established. Should Spider-Man: Brand New Day follow Spider-Man: No Way Home’s theatrical to SVOD release pattern, it may take as long as seven months before the film arrives on Netflix. If that’s the case, viewers can expect Spider-Man: Brand New Day to debut sometime around Feb. 26, 2027, on the platform.

Currently, the only way to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes.
