Evil Dead franchise star Bruce Campbell revealed in a social media post Monday that he has a “treatable” but not “curable” cancer.

Campbell, 67, broke the news in an X post that reads, “Hi folks, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that – I’m having one of those. It’s also called a type of cancer that’s ‘treatable’ not ‘curable.’ I apologize if that’s a shock – it was to me, too.”

The actor said in the post that he wasn’t going to go into any more details but did say, “professionally that a few things have to change,” noting that appearances and conventions and work in general “need to take a back seat to treatment.”

As such, Campbell noted, he will have to cancel several convention appearances this year.

Campbell also said in the post, “I’m not trying to enlist sympathy – or advice – I just want to get ahead of this in case false information gets out (which it will).”

Bruce Campbell Still Plans To Tour With His New Film Later This Year

Bruce Campbell said in his X post that his plan is “to get as well as possible over the summer so that I can tour with my new movie Ernie & Emma” this fall.”

The actor said in a recent Zoom interview that his plan is to screen the film with Q&As at about 20 Alamo Draft House Cinemas in September, October and mid-November.

A comedy drama, Ernie & Emma follows a retired pear salesman, Ernie (Campbell), who is tasked by his late wife, Emma (voice of Robin McAlpine), to spread her ashes at designated spots that had meaning to both of them during their decades of life together.

Campbell, who also wrote and directed Ernie & Emma, recently held the world premiere of the film at the Holly Theater in Medford, Ore., on Valentine’s Day. The film is produced by Campbell’s wife, Ida Gearon.

Campbell burst onto the movie scene in 1981 with the low-budget horror classic, The Evil Dead, with his longtime friends Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.

Directed by Raimi and produced by Tapert, the film spawned two sequels and a spinoff TV series, Ash vs. Evil Dead. Campbell, Raimi and Tapert have also produced two reimaginings of the horror tale – 2013’s Evil Dead and 2023’s Evil Dead Rise – and a third, Evil Dead Burn, is set for a July 24 release.

A native of Detroit, Campbell has collaborated with Raimi and Tapert several times over the years, as well as the director’s brother, Ted Raimi. In Ernie & Emma, Ted Raimi and his niece/Sam Raimi’s daughter, Emma Raimi, play supporting roles.

Campbell gave some assurances about what’s ahead for him in his post, writing, “Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while.”

The actor-filmmaker also tipped his cap to his fans in the post, many of whom he’s met in his countless number of appearances at conventions over the decade.

“As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon!” Campbell wrote.
