The St. Louis Cardinals entered the trade deadline with some difficult decisions to make, particularly as the organization weighs which pieces can help its next competitive window. That uncertainty naturally put several of the club’s younger contributors under the spotlight.
Among them was Alec Burleson, a 27-year-old first baseman who had emerged as one of the Cardinals’ more dependable offensive players. With St. Louis falling further from the postseason picture, reports suggested the team could listen on Burleson despite his remaining team control.
“The Cardinals have yet to participate in the trade deadline festivities, but they’re likely to be sellers after a rough week dropped them four games out of the final NL Wild Card spot,” Charlie Wright wrote for MLB Trade Rumors at the time, pointing to one of the many trade reports revealing interest in Burleson from more competitive teams. “St. Louis has multiple veterans who could help contending teams. One option garnering interest is first baseman Alec Burleson, with Jon Morosi of MLB Network reporting he’s ‘one of the most popular controllable bats’ available.”
Those trade reports seemed to reach Burleson who recently shared his candid reaction to the idea of being moved.

Appearing on Foul Territory, Burleson was asked by host Katie Woo about his outlook on sticking with the Cardinals as the team’s “new franchise face.” And his response offered an unusually candid look at how he viewed the possibility of leaving St. Louis earlier this month.
“I was thinking about that at the trade deadline this year, obviously we’re building towards something that is going to look really good in the next couple of years,” Burleson said. “In the off chance this trade deadline that I was traded, it would have kind of hurt a little bit just to leave that.”
And Burleson made clear that his attachment to St. Louis extends beyond simply playing for the organization.
“I love St. Louis, my family loves St. Louis, obviously all of the guys here I’ve played with — either we played in the minors together or we’ve been with the Cardinals in the big leagues for a while,” he added.
That connection helps explain why trade speculation carried some emotional weight for a player who has spent his entire major league career with the Cardinals.
St Louis Cardinals’ Trade Candidate Has Delivered
Burleson’s attachment to St. Louis also makes sense given how important he has become offensively. After a breakout 2025 season, he has continued producing in 2026, and was slashing .284/.347/.458 as the deadline hit.
His power remains more moderate than some first basemen, but his contact ability and improving quality of contact have made him a valuable lineup piece. Plus he has several years of arbitration eligibility ahead.
As a result, it seems he is going to be a key part of the Cardinals’ near-term future, with playoff contention more than likely in the next few seasons.
