Could Trent Alexander-Arnold Ever Return To Liverpool?

Handed an opportunity from the start for England against Czechia on Tuesday, Trent Alexander-Arnold demonstrated why he remains a big part of The Three Lions’ future. Indeed, the 27-year-old was one of the best players on the pitch as Thomas Tuchel’s team claimed a 2-0 win in the UEFA Nations League.

Alexander-Arnold set up Anthony Gordon for the opening goal of the game and was a constant source of creativity down the right side as England controlled matters. One wonders if it was a performance that made Tuchel rue not taking the Real Madrid full back to the 2026 World Cup.

“We never doubted that he can produce these kind of assists,” said Tuchel afterwards.“I think the second half the position, a bit of a deeper position, suited him more than the higher position in the first half. Overall, I think we had a good and professional performance. Of course the red card is such a heavy influence in the game.

“We need to keep focused, and Trent was a big help in this, because he’s very secure on the ball and can be decisive with his crosses. He did this solid defending and one decisive action that helped us score, so a good performance overall.”

Watching Alexander-Arnold start on his personal road to redemption as an England player might have raised fresh questions in the minds of Liverpool supporters. The Anfield club has yet to truly replace the 27-year-old who is struggling to hold down a starting spot at Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho seems to favour Denzel Dumfries at right back.

By leaving Liverpool as a free agent, Alexander-Arnold burned a lot of bridges within the Liverpool support. Once seen as an icon of the Anfield club, the defender became a villain when he joined Real Madrid having run down his contract. It would take a lot for Alexander-Arnold to achieve forgiveness.

And yet his personal situation at Real Madrid and Liverpool’s failure to move on from Alexander-Arnold means all parties should consider a reunion, as difficult as that would be for some supporters to accept. Everyone would be better off for recognising the mistakes that were made in the past.

Tuchel has given Alexander-Arnold a second chance in the England team and is reaping the rewards of that decision. Liverpool should consider doing something similar by offering the 27-year-old a route back to his boyhood club. Alexander-Arnold certainly still has the quality to perform at the elite level.
