Fans of the Chicago Cubs got a surprising update on one of the team’s former pitchers as a National League rival finds itself in the headlines.

Though the Washington Nationals have spent much of the 2026 season attempting to build momentum around a young roster, but the club recently found itself dealing with an unexpected off-field controversy.

The situation centers on veteran starting pitcher Trevor Williams, who spent parts of two seasons with the Cubs before joining the Nationals. While Williams has largely remained out of the spotlight this season, a viral video involving a Nationals executive suddenly thrust the veteran back into the national conversation.

The fallout was significant enough that the Nationals moved quickly to part ways with a longtime employee.

The controversy began when a hidden-camera video surfaced appearing to show Nationals Director of Community Relations Sean Hudson discussing Williams and the organization’s social media strategy.

According to a report from the New York Post, Hudson suggested Williams had been excluded from certain team promotional content because of his religious views and past public comments.

“One of our pitchers, Trevor Williams. He’s super Christian-Catholic, all these tattoos that mean a lot,” Hudson said in the video, per the Post.

The Nationals responded swiftly. According to both the Washington Post and Sports Business Journal, Hudson was terminated shortly after the video became public.
