The Los Angeles Dodgers’ young outfielder Andy Pages has emerged as one of the defending champions’ most important contributors this season, transforming himself from a promising part-time player into an All-Star in the competitive National League field.
His performance has rewarded both the organization and the fans who believed in his long-term potential.
But while Pages celebrated one of the biggest moments of his baseball career, the milestone also highlighted the difficult reality he continues to face away from the field.
Los Angeles Dodgers’ All-Star Honor Comes With Emotional Challenge
Pages’ first All-Star selection represented a dream realized after years of sacrifice, but informing his family came with a heartbreaking obstacle. For the Dodgers outfielder, sharing life-changing news with loved ones still living in his native Cuba remains far more complicated than simply making a phone call.
“Andy Pages said he tried sending a message to his family in Cuba that he made his first All-Star team, but it hasn’t (been) delivered yet,” The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reported. “His wife, Alondra, broke the news to him. ‘I’m going to feel very proud to give that satisfaction to them with that happiness,’ he said in Spanish.”
The emotional update underscores the communication barriers that continue to separate Pages from his parents despite reaching one of baseball’s biggest individual honors. While virtually every other first-time All-Star will conceivably be able to notify family members immediately, Pages connection to his former home remains tenuous.
Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star’s Family Sacrifice Creates Unseen Challenges
Pages’ All-Star breakthrough is rooted in sacrifices that began long before he reached the major leagues.
“At 16, Pages left behind his family in Cuba to chase his dream of becoming a major league player,” Alden Gonzalez reported for ESPN. “His father used to make his bats out of spare lumber and his mother was a key support figure throughout his youth. But apart from a brief visit three years ago, he has not seen them since.”
As a result, Pages has wrestled with communication challenges as a routine part of his life, and that was no different even after he learned he would be an All-Star
“Pages’ calls home usually don’t go through,” Gonzalez added. “He’ll routinely go days without hearing from his parents. Sometimes they’ll call when he’s asleep in the middle of the night, taking advantage of the few times when power is restored. Often, he’ll take the field without knowing if they’re OK.”
Those circumstances made Pages’ first All-Star selection even more emotional. While teammates and fans celebrated his breakout season immediately, Pages could only hope his family would eventually receive the news.
