FC Barcelona has tried to sign a Manchester City player according to Mundo Deportivo, citing anonymous sources.
The Premier League giants are currently in crisis, after being found guilty of all 115 of the charges related to serious breaches of the English top flight’s financial rules by an independent commission.
How the Mancunians will be punished is currently unknown. Suspected penalties range from being stripped of their domestic trophies over the period in question, to points reductions and relegation to the Championship – if not all of those things.
In the case of the latter development, an exodus of top stars such as Erling Haaland is expected.
The Norwegian number 9 has often been linked to Barca, but his hefty wages and the commissions required for his father and agents have always gotten in the way of a potential coup.
In the meantime, however, it has been revealed that the Catalans tried to tempt one of City’s star defenders even before they were found guilty of the charges.
FC Barcelona sounded out Josko Gvardiol
By Mundo Deportivo, it has been revealed that Barca tried to pull off a transfer that would’ve brought Croatia international Josko Gvardiol to the Spotify Camp Nou.
Head coach Hansi Flick and his staff admire the 24-year-old, and would have received two players in one because of his ease in not just operating as a centre back but also at left back.
This could’ve complicated matters further for Alejandro Balde, who is currently the third choice on the left flank behind La Masia graduate Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo.
Gvardiol would’ve been the perfect left-sided central defender partner for Pau Cubarsi, who is currently joined by Gerard Martin or an Andreas Christensen that is once more suffering injury niggles.
In the end, however, Gvardiol wasn’t up for moving. He already had a renewal offer on the table, which he ended up penning this summer in order to commit to the Etihad project until June 30, 2031.
Yet what happens with City could change everything. If it’s relegation, you find it hard to imagine that big names such as Gvardiol will settle for playing second tier football while entering the peak of their careers.
This could open to the door again to FC Barcelona, and how Flick’s high-fliers would be boosted by the arrival of Gvardiol and/or Haaland. In December, both players should grace Catalonia as City face the Blaugrana in the Champions League league phase.
