The New York Mets’ 2026 season is nearing its conclusion after a year that fell well short of expectations surrounding the club entering the campaign.
New York was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention earlier this month, leaving the Mets with only a handful of games remaining before their season finale on September 27.
“A 7-2 loss to the Phillies (on Sunday) was a fitting end to the home slate of a season that went off the rails in April and never recovered,” Tim Britton wrote for The Athletic. “The Mets’ 36-45 record in Queens this season is their worst since 2012. It was the first time they finished below .500 in a full season at home since 2018.”
But just eight days before the Mets officially close out their season with a road game against the Washington Nationals, a former New York catcher announced that his own baseball career is over.
Former New York Mets Catcher Makes Retirement Decision Shortly Before End Of Season
Chance Sisco, who Mets fans will remember as a member of the 2021 team, revealed that he is retiring from professional baseball after more than a decade.
“After 14 years of playing professional baseball, I’ve decided it’s time to retire from playing the game I’ve dedicated most of my life to,” Sisco wrote on Instagram. “Baseball has given me more than I could have ever imagined. The opportunity to play for organizations like the (Baltimore) Orioles, Mets, (Seattle) Mariners, (Minnesota) Twins, (St. Louis) Cardinals, (Long Island) Duck’s and (Chicago) Dog’s, compete at the highest levels, and make memories that will stay with me forever is something I’ll always be grateful for.”
Sisco entered professional baseball as a second-round pick of the Orioles in the 2013 MLB Draft and quickly established himself as one of the organization’s more promising catching prospects. He won the South Atlantic League batting title in 2014 after hitting .340 and later represented Baltimore in the 2016 All-Star Futures Game.
He reached the major leagues with the Orioles in 2017 and spent parts of five seasons with Baltimore before the Mets claimed him off waivers in June 2021. Sisco appeared in only five games for New York, recording one hit and one RBI before being designated for assignment that September.
Across 517 at-bats with Baltimore and New York, Sisco hit .197 with a .317 on-base percentage and .334 slugging percentage. He finished with 16 home runs.
Former New York Mets Catcher Ends Long Baseball Journey
Sisco continued searching for opportunities after leaving New York, spending time with the Mariners and Twins organizations before moving into independent baseball.
His career eventually took him to the Ducks, where he found another productive chapter. He also played for the Dogs and produced a .301 batting average with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs in 2025.
Now, with the 2026 MLB season approaching its official end, Sisco has decided his playing days are over. His career included stops across affiliated and independent baseball, with the Mets representing only a brief chapter — but one that remains part of the 14-year journey he reflected on while announcing his retirement.
