Marvel has re-released Avengers: Endgame in theaters in order to squeeze some more cash out of it, now labeled Avengers Endgame: Encore. The motivator there is not just seeing the blockbuster superhero film on the big screen again, but the addition of four new scenes that connect directly to Avengers: Doomsday, this December’s big new amalgamation.
It’s a weird concept, and certainly feels like a lot of the phases after that are being brushed to the side in favor of trying to make Doomsday a direct sequel to Endgame, but Marvel thought it was a good idea. Of course, there are plenty of fans who are annoyed they are being told to sit through a three-hour movie for a few minutes of new scenes.
Leaked footage is making its way through the internet, but that is a big no-no for copyright reasons. Rather, if you really want to know, here are just plain descriptions of each scene. Spoilers follow:
- Bruce Banner records a video as he works on a Gamma radiation project, and then Doctor Doom shows up off-camera. He says, “I’ve come to collect you,” and Banner starts to Hulk rage. Latverian symbols appear on the ground. There is theorizing this was supposed to be a Brand New Day post-credits scene, but it’s been put here instead. This is rather big news as there was never any official word that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was meant to be in Doomsday. Now it appears he might be, but on the side of Doom, which is a big problem.
- Loki, last scene holding the multiverse together in the season 2 finale of his show, appears in the branched “Steve goes back in time to be with Peggy” timeline created at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Steve hides while Peggy answers the door. “Can I help you?” she says, and Loki says, “No, but I can help you, both of you,” and Steve shows himself. Doom is pruning all alternate timelines and worlds, and they are in danger because of the time travel split.
- There’s a TVA scene with almost all the main characters from that show, including Loki, Mobius, Cast, Ouroboros and Miss Minutes, as they watch different worlds collide and be destroyed, the entire multiverse starting to collapse, the basis for the Doomsday storyline, as mentioned above.
- Finally, there is a scene at the very end of the credits where we hear the clang of Tony Stark building his Iron Man suit, only it’s revealed that this time, it’s Doom forging his own mask. The implication here is that there will be some sort of connection from Stark to Doom, as they obviously share an actor and face in Robert Downey Jr. This may have been assumed by many, but this is the first moment that feels like actual confirmation. There are many theories about how this will play out, but no one has come up with anything concrete yet.
So yes, short scenes maybe, but surprisingly important ones. The Hulk reveal, Loki’s involvement, the start of the multiverse collapse, and the Stark and Doom connection. It’s unclear if these specific scenes will be in Doomsday, but it’s doubtful, as they seem crafted for Endgame specifically. More to come, likely in a new trailer soon.
