Jennifer Lopez Hits A Career Peak — With A Decade-Old Song

Jennifer Lopez’s past few musical projects have failed to produce the kind of hit that made her a superstar decades ago. Just as her acting career took off in the ‘90s, Lopez seized the moment and also proved her talent as a dancer and hitmaker, and there was a stretch in the early aughts when she would regularly top the Billboard charts and, at times, simultaneously claim the biggest movie in the country.

These days, Lopez is more successful when it comes to acting, but some of her greatest hits continue to appeal to a large audience. More than a decade after she teamed up with frequent collaborator Pitbull for the electronic anthem “On the Floor,” that track is in the midst of a sudden viral resurgence, and it has quickly become her biggest win on multiple rosters.

Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” Debuted Last Week

It was only a few days ago that “On the Floor” debuted on both of Billboard‘s worldwide tallies. Last week, the track opened at No. 117 on the Billboard Global 200 and at No. 80 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. The song marked only her second trip to the rosters, which measure the most popular cuts all around the planet and the most-consumed tunes in every nation other than America, respectively.

“On the Floor” Surges on Both Worldwide Charts

In its second week on the charts, “On the Floor” enjoys a massive growth spurt. On the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., the collaboration shoots to No. 15. The song also enters the top 40 on the Billboard Global 200, pushing from No. 117 to No. 37. That dramatic gain is tied to a viral scene from the Amazon Prime series Off Campus, which is soundtracked by “On the Floor,” and which even features a character dressed as Lopez herself.

Jennifer Lopez Reaches a New Career Peak

From the moment “On the Floor” reached the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., it marked a new peak for Lopez. “Pa’ Ti,” a team-up with Maluma, spent one week at No. 91 back in October 2020. The singer establishes a career peak for the second week in a row.

“On the Floor” now becomes her highest-rising win on the Billboard Global 200 as well. That was not the case only a few days ago when the dance-floor banger arrived. When “On the Floor” opened at No. 117, it sat 11 rungs underneath where “Pa’ Ti” started and peaked more than half a decade ago. As the single surges north 80 spaces in one enormous push, it easily passes “Pa’ Ti” and earns Lopez her first top 40 success on the ranking.

“On the Floor” Could Soar Into the Top 10

“On the Floor” is the latest years-old track to enjoy a new life on the charts thanks to a high-profile sync. The immediate availability of nearly every piece of recorded music of all time makes it easier than ever for compositions featured in film and TV to suddenly become streaming and sales smashes, if they can reach a wide enough audience.

Sometimes the sync is only the beginning, and virality on platforms like TikTok fuel chart gains, or potentially even debuts, as is the case with Lopez and Pitbull. These kinds of moments typically last for several weeks, and there’s a real chance that “On the Floor” may soon break into the top 10 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., and perhaps also the Billboard Global 200, if things go well. If that does turn out to be the case, it will mark the first placement within that hugely competitive tier for both Lopez and Pitbull.
