The LIV Golf restructuring announcement, which was released in a letter by LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil, included an announcement that LIV Golf would enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in order to restructure it’s business. In addition to that announcement, O’Neil announced sweeping changes to the league’s tournament format.
These changes are intended by O’Neil to be part of an evolution of LIV Golf’s competitive format. These changes will make the league’s tournaments look different from what has defined LIV Golf since its launch.
LIV Golf plans to expand its field to 75 players. While details have not yet been provided on all the details surrounding how the expanded field will be structured or how additional positions will be filled, the additional players will provide more depth to tournament fields than the previous field size of 57.
With, the addition of 18 additional players to the field, an introduction of a cut system will be new in 2027. Introduction of a cut system is a major departure from the league’s previous approaches to tournament finishes, in which no cut existed. LIV Golf has not provided any specifics about how many players will advance and how many will be cut.
According to O’Neil’s letter, LIV also intends to introduce a new path for players into LIV, that of the Monday qualifier. Monday qualifiers will give players outside of the existing LIV Golf roster a direct route into the competition. Qualification criteria has not yet been announced, but the introduction of qualifiers fits into O’Neil’s broader picture of “complete, not compete” by adapting their league to try and find a more harmonious fit for LIV Golf within the broader competitive golf ecosystem.
With the restructuring, it’s clear O’Neil is trying to adapt LIV Golf while trying to stay true to it’s original objective to be a global golf league. The league still intends to host tournaments across five different continents and place a greater emphasis on national identities for its teams and team format. LIV says it intends to continue to feature music and entertainment as part of it’s tournaments and to have it’s players to continue to directly engage with fans at tournaments.
LIV initiated chapter 11 proceedings on September 8, and said it intends to wrap up those proceedings in early 2027 ahead of the new season. Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, while intended to help restructure debts in order to help LIV Golf meet financial obligations, are subject to supervision and discretion of the bankruptcy court, and require court and stakeholder approval.
The early 2027 date therefore seems to be a goal rather than a specific schedule, LIV has yet to reveal the complete details of it’s proposed 2027 format, and much remains to be determined. It remains unclear how many of these objectives will come to fruition.
