There has been much controversy surrounding MobLand, a top Paramount+ show, which returns for season 2 on Friday. There were debates about whether Tom Hardy would return for the already-greenlit season 3, which would have been a big problem given that he’s the lead of the series, but that all seems to have been resolved, and yes, he’s coming back. So now season 2 is here, and we can see what Hardy and the frankly kind of stupid Harrigan crime family is up to now. Critics are chiming in, and MobLand season 2 now has a Rotten Tomatoes score.
It’s early, but for now, it’s perfect. MobLand season 2 currently has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, but that could change as more reviews come in. Season 1 had a 77% and a lower 67% from audiences, but the show set a record for a Paramount+ day-one series premiere with 2.2 million global views. That was also a record that surpassed Taylor Sheridan programming, passing up Tulsa King (MobLand is a rare Paramount win that is not from Sheridan). Later, MobLand blew up further to 8.8 million viewers. It’s an enormous hit similar to Lioness and Landman.
It stands to reason that MobLand season 2 is going to pull in big numbers as well. Yes, there are sophomore slumps across the industry for second seasons of shows, though at least MobLand had a 1.5-year gap between seasons rather than two or three. And it hasn’t been much more than a year since the season 1 finale aired. That should help it retain viewers more than other series.
Spoilers for season 1, but season 2 will have Conrad and Maeve Harrigan get out of jail, though there’s now a power struggle among the younger generations. Harry got stabbed by his wife, and his daughter is now getting mixed up with the rather awful Eddie Harrigan. Hate that guy.
Of the reviews that are in, many are quite positive indeed. Here’s a sampling:
Collider – “It’s a clear evolution and maturation, showing that Ritchie is so much more than a one-trick pony and proving that there’s still so much more that the auteur can offer.”
The Upcoming – “It’s fast-paced, darkly funny at points and carried by an A-list ensemble that’s made even better by standout turns from Hardy and Flynn.”
I think MobLand benefits from there not being all that many mob-based shows on TV these days (some of them are on Paramount+, to a certain extent). On Netflix, that service has found success with The Gentlemen as of late, though it’s an entirely different vibe. I would recommend both shows, and now we’ll see what happens on MobLand week to week.
