Here’s the finished puzzle in the order I solved it:

Today’s NYT Connections is a 2/5 on the Connections Bot difficulty scale though it took my a bit of time to really get going on this one. I suppose I rarely wear dress shirts, which doesn’t help, and it took me a while to work out the wood connections. I was pretty sure the yellow words were all breath fresheners, but spray threw me off so I thought this might be some red herrings. Other possible red herrings:

• Spray could suggest wood finishing (spray varnish) or laundry (spray starch), pulling it away from breath fresheners (and a little too close to laundry in my humble opinion).
• Starch overlaps with spray as a laundry term, but also could evoke stiffness like wood grain.
• Press might suggest “press” as in pressing wood veneer, or even “press” in a printing sense, or even “the press” as in the media, though it’s dress shirt care in today’s puzzle.
• Cat could tempt you toward animals or idioms broadly speaking, but it belongs specifically to “cool” expressions (cool cat) here.
• Grain could suggest food (whole grains) before you land on wood.
• Knots might evoke rope, sailing, or nervous stomachs (“knots”) rather than wood.
• Customer feels like an odd one out entirely, an unusual word to sit next to beans, cat, and cucumber, until you remember the phrase “cool customer.”
• Gum and mint could both suggest flavors or plants generally, rather than specifically breath fresheners.
