The New York Mets continue searching for answers after moving on from manager Carlos Mendoza, and speculation has naturally shifted toward plenty of potential replacements.
One former Mets player whose name has drawn attention thanks to his new role with the team is four-time Boston Red Sox All-Star J.D. Martinez.
The longtime slugger has remained close to the Mets organization since his playing career ended in Queens, but his accomplishments on the field were most memorable in Boston, particularly after he helped power the club to a World Series championship in 2018.

Martinez took on a new role with the Mets this season, driving some speculation that he might be a candidate to replace Mendoza in the near future.
“J.D. Martinez is receiving his baseball fix as a Mets special assistant and isn’t in a hurry to increase that workload,” Mike Puma reported for the New York Post. “The former Mets DH told The Post on Friday that he’s not interested in becoming the team’s next full-time manager.”
When asked directly about the possibility, Martinez offered a simple explanation.
“I like my freedom,” Martinez said, shortly before the Mets lost to the division rival Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. “I have worked too many years to not keep it.”
That four-word response about his personal freedom reflects a former player who appears content with life after an accomplished major league career rather than jumping immediately into the daily grind of managing.
New York Mets Search For Replacement After Firing Carlos Mendoza
Martinez’s decision leaves the Mets continuing their search following Mendoza’s departure, while the former manager seems likely to find a new job soon.
“As for Mendoza, his days in baseball are surely not done,” Anthony DiComo wrote for MLB.com. “Well-liked in the clubhouse and around Citi Field, Mendoza navigated the challenges of being a first-time manager in New York City with grace. While no Mets skipper since Bobby Valentine has managed again after leaving New York, Mendoza, at age 46, stands a reasonable chance of being the next one to do so.”
Though Martinez ruled himself out, Red Sox fans will testify that he has plenty to offer in a coaching role, particularly as a hitting guru. The former designated hitter built one of the most productive offensive careers of his generation, earning four All-Star selections and two Silver Slugger Awards in arguably the best stretch of his career with the Red Sox.
For now, Martinez appears happy contributing behind the scenes rather than occupying the manager’s office. His comments suggest that, after spending nearly two decades navigating the pressures of professional baseball, maintaining flexibility and enjoying life away from the daily demands of a 162-game season has become a higher priority than pursuing another high-profile role.
