The Boston Red Sox have transformed their season by finding contributions from unexpected places. After struggling to establish consistency earlier in the year, Boston has surged into contention behind a surprising manager change, strong pitching, timely offense and a bullpen that has become one of the team’s biggest strengths.
That success has also changed the way the organization approaches roster construction. Instead of searching only for immediate fixes, the Red Sox have continued building depth throughout the system as they prepare for an increasingly likely postseason run.
Boston Red Sox Add Familiar Veteran With Local Connection
The latest addition brings both experience and a unique connection to the franchise.
“Red Sox have signed John Brebbia to a minor-league deal per sources,” NESN’s Tom Caron reported. “The 36-year-old righty had a 1.62 in 16.2 innings with AAA Albuquerque. Contending teams can’t have enough depth.”
For the Red Sox, the addition could be needed at the big-league level sooner rather than later as the team continues to tax its relievers with clutch winning efforts. And for Brebbia, the move represents a return to familiar territory.
“It’s a return to Boston for Brebbia in multiple ways,” Charlie Wright noted for MLB Trade Rumors. “He was born in the city and grew up in the area. The veteran also finished last season in the organization, though he didn’t reach the big leagues. Brebbia joined the club on a minor league deal last September but wasn’t healthy enough to pitch for Triple-A Worcester.”
The veteran right-hander brings nearly a decade of major league experience after previously pitching for teams including the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox and others. While his role is uncertain, Boston’s recent success has created a need for reliable depth options.

Brebbia’s signing comes as the Red Sox continue riding a strong stretch and positioning themselves as legitimate contenders.
The team has already built one of baseball’s deepest bullpens, making his path back to the majors more complicated. However, having experienced pitchers available in Triple-A can become critical during a long postseason push.
“Boston has the best bullpen ERA in the league by a decent margin,” Wright added. “The team added lefty Erik Miller at the trade deadline. There isn’t a clear opening for Brebbia, but it doesn’t hurt to have veteran depth waiting in the minors.”
Brebbia’s path back to relevance has included several setbacks this season. He began the year outside of Colorado’s plans, spent time trying to earn another opportunity with Minnesota and later returned to the Rockies organization before finding success in the minors.
His recent Triple-A performance helped revive his chances. Brebbia posted a 1.62 ERA across 16 2/3 innings with Albuquerque while showing improved control and maintaining the ability to miss bats.
For Boston, the move carries little risk and gives the club another experienced arm as it navigates the final stretch of a surprising season. For Brebbia, it provides a chance to return home and potentially earn one more major league opportunity with a team chasing October baseball.
